More Street Shots
« on: October 12, 2009, 06:06:29 pm »

Three from today. Two from the bus station in traditional B&W, but one from the street that needed to stay in color for obvious reasons. Had to crop the lady a bit. Mea culpa, Jason, but then, I'm not a minor and my morals can't be corrupted any more than they already are (I drink Perfect Manhattans).

By the way, anyone interested in street photography NEEDS!!! Looking In, the catalog for the Robert Frank exhibit at MOMA. You can buy it from MOMA's museum shop, but you also can buy it from Amazon for a few bucks less. It's a stunning piece of work. Looks as if I'll end up with two copies. There's the standard edition, which I bought, and then an expanded edition I didn't know about until I read the standard edition. The expanded edition has a bunch of Frank's contact sheets and I've got to see those contacts. No one can copy Robert Frank's work (or would want to), but you can learn a lot from his work and this book.

Nice pix, Russ. The first one looks confusing at first glance, but the positioning of the confusing elements serves the composition well: The row of lights leads to the head of the driver, and the wiper blade brackets the scene on the left. That is my favorite of the three.

As for Robert Frank, I think you mean the Met, not MOMA. "Looking In" is indeed the Met's exhibit catalog. They didn't have it yet when I was there just before the exhibit opened, but it is now in their store, and at Amazon as you mention.

Checking the MOMA site (because MOMA might seem a likelier place for a Robert Frank show), I found another goodie: MOMA will be having a Cartier-Bresson show starting April 11 and running through June 21 of 2010. The Met's Robert Frank show runs through January 3 of 2010. I plan to get back to NY for Frank probably in November, and i guess I'll have to get to MOMA next April, too. That will give me another excuse to pig out at their delicious Terrace 5 Cafe.

I like #1 because of the confusion: I have been looking at it for a while and still can't work it out.  I assume that is you bottom right?  I like #2 even more but I can't say why, so that isn't much of a critique   .

Eric, I just looked at the invoice from my copy of Looking In. Now I understand. The book came from SFMoMA -- the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, which is running a series of Frank's films. Much confusion.
