I have just been reading the third instalment of the review of the Canon EOS 1D MkII, written by John Clements in the British Journal of Photography. In it, he makes a very interesting observation about the performance of Canon cameras with write accelerated cards. According to Lexar, Canon does not support write accelerated technology and write accelerated cards are an 'expensive luxury' and a waste of time with Canon cameras. Good news as I do not possess any of these type of cards and I can go ahead and buy the much cheaper standard type. Others seem to be finding the same thing. I would think that microdrives will perform nearly as well with Canon as solid state cards.
