Some shots and a story

So ... I live in NYC and I decided to take my camera for a stroll in the neighborhood ... not something I do all that often ... and when I do, I'm not usually shooting people.

Crazy.

Interesting and probably scary for you. I've had enough negative feedback in shooting people up close that I just don't bother. I shoot people mostly in large scenes or as part of a scene so that it is unobtrusive and doesn't matter to most people.

Jeremy, John, You guys need to work on your mind-clouding skills. You may both be too young to remember the Shadow, but quite a few years ago on the radio the Shadow could make himself invisible by "clouding men's minds," and thereby secretly learn "what evil lurks in the hearts of men." I'm not sure you need to make yourself invisible to find out what evil lurks in the hearts of men; all you have to do is look around. But I think you more or less have to make yourself invisible to do street photography.

I think I was doing street photography in Manitou Springs about the same time Jeremy was doing street photography in New York City. Here are four from my shoot:

[attachment=17073:Adams_Cafe.jpg] [attachment=17074:Musician.jpg] [attachment=17076:Spice_of_Life.jpg] [attachment=17075:Pedestri...th_Lemon.jpg]

I made the restaurant shot through a window in a hallway. Of course no one saw me shoot that one. The guy with the guitar saw me shoot but couldn't have cared less because he was hoping for a handout. The guy in front of the coffee shop never saw me shoot because the camera was hanging at my side when I tripped the shutter. The guy carrying the lemon and the frond saw me raise the camera and shoot, but he wasn't really sure I did it. That last thing is most important. You've got to be casual and not make sudden, jerky moves, but, above all, you've got to be quick. All of these shots were with a Nikon D3 and a 50mm prime lens. None of them are cropped.

By the way, Jeremy, in one of his books, HCB mentions being chased a couple of times. You're in good company.

Jeremy,

I've shot a few times on NY streets (mostly Manhattan), but never had a problem with people chasing me! Occasionally someone sees me point a camera and covers their face, at which point I simply lower my camera and let them pass...

Here is something I though I'd share....

Sayeed, That's an interesting film clip, but the guy's a kook. Who but a nut would shoot on the street with a flash, wearing a photo vest that makes him look as if he's on a safari? A flash??? On the street??? What he's doing isn't street shooting. What he's doing is begging for attention. Most of the photographs he showed in the clip were blown out and useless because of the stupid flash. This guy needs professional help.

This guy was discussed on TOP and he was roundly criticized by the majority of posters for his methods of street shooting.

  Yes, indeed! The guy definitely falls into the "nut" category! I just wanted to show that people get away with almost anything in NYC!
