Is there much difference between Epson's ICC profiles and...
« on: October 01, 2009, 06:11:11 pm »

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone here had compared Epsons's canned ICC profiles for the 3800 and Fine Art Velvet paper and Eric Chan's profile for the same paper?  Is Eric's better?

If you are talking about the free profiles on Eric's site, these are only for the 3800 ABW driver and not for general color printing.  The Epson profiles are for color printing and it's a different driver.

For my 3800 I have found Epson's profiles quite good. I recently got both a color profile and an ABW profile from Eric Chan for a paper that does not have canned profiles available, and Eric's profiles are indeed excellent and very reasonably priced. I will definitely order more profiles from him for any paper I want to try that doesn't have a good canned profile.

Hassiman

I don't have the same printer as you do.
I'm still using the epson 1800.
A few weeks ago,I contacted Eric, and he made two profiles for me ,and I was amazed at the improvement...this was for Crane's Museo Silver Rag paper.

I'm seriously thinking of upgrading to a 3800,and I'll definitely use Eric's profiles again.
He's a gentleman, and a pleasure to deal with ,as I had many questions ,which he answered quickly and directly.

Hope this helps

I use the canned color profiles from Epson for VFA (awesome paper) and the results are excellent. On the color side, it appears Epson has done a fine job with profiles - for THEIR papers for the 3800. I also use Eric's ABW profiles for VFA and a variety of other papers and the output is head & shoulders above using factor color profiles and printing using ABW - as good as ABW is.

I also recently bought a color profile from Eric for IGFS and the improvement over the stock Ilford profile was startling. I've yet to see a factory non-Epson paper profile for the 3800 deliver anything resembling impressive results. Muted colors, too little/too much ink, too much impact of paper color on print colors, etc, etc.  The ONLY exception so far (for me) is the (free) PixelGenius color profile for Epson's Exh Fibre - excellent.

I WILL be buying more profiles from Eric. Great service, great output, and at the price, virtually a no-brainer.

I totally agree (and I didn't just buy from him because his name was Eric.)
