I suggest you use a 77mm filter, as it would fit the front threads much better

yes you are quite right - it is a 77mm filter and one I have grown to question the use of the more I shoot.
Using this lens recently thru a window with double pane glass I couldn't understand why some shots were not quite as sharp as normal then it hit me - after going outside and retaking the shot what a difference.
Then i read a few posts about the pros cons of uv filters some never use them and others swear by them. Now that i own several lens you can't put them on like my canon 15mm fisheye - the idea of naked glass is growing on me.
I used to put flat UV glass filters on every new lens i bought (like this one) to protect the coating etc. now I don't and i haven't had any accidents but i always was a stickler for putting the lens cap back on ASAP after shooting. Also most of my work is landscape, portrait etc not too much hectic action. Maybe its just luck but my sharpest shots seem to be with naked glass.
