What is your budget?

In fact i have one Apple Cinema Display 30" which i love even it is not the top monitor, then i went to buy Eizo ColorEdge CG222W [22"], the price was a little high [$1500] but it is an exceptional monitor, but really i don't know if even this monitor is not top quality.

If it's just for tools and not images, anything will do. I use an el cheapo Hannspree 22" for my 2nd monitor.

I use an old Sony for the tools - It's a good idea, it leaves your main screen open for the image and lets you see all of the tools without moving things around.

I use a Samsung 24" Syncmaster flat panel display. I can't remember the exact model. I needed to set the luminosity to the minimum value as I found it too bright.

I heard Dell Ultrasharp [24 something (2409WFP) model or maybe that new U2410] got great reviews and it is cheap, i maybe get that one but 22"

Also have a look at NEC monitors, also they have great monitors to be considered, i have Apple and Eizo for my Mac, now i am confusing between Dell and NEC for my 2 windows PCs for games and movies.

What model do you have? I'd took another Eizo or NEC with same panel type and height - in other case it may be difficult to get similar luminance and white point color.

I recommend the ViewSonic VX line.  They are quick, have good contrast, and are inexpensive.  Perfect for a second monitor.  The VX2433WM (24 inch) is under $200 and is 1920*1080(HD).  Anything larger will only net you 1900*1200, which is as high resolution as LCDs go(but most of the 26-30 inch models are much slower while offering the same display area.

I'd add another high bit LUT IPS with the same panel height - NEC 2490WUXi2 or 2190UXi. Or at least high bit LUT S-PVA - Eizo S2433W or NEC 2190UXp.

A perfect companion for CG243W would be Eizo SX2461W - it is limited incarnation of CG243W, without the posibility of hardware calibration, so you can't use Color Navigator to calibrate it, but the panel and electronics are basically the same (H-IPS with 12/16bit 3D LUT, 10bit displayport, electronic uniformity compensation and brightness stabilization, and everything you ever wanted to have in a display, but were afraid to ask), so it's almost in the same league.

I'd rather recommend not to buy a chepeo LCD. CG243W is one of the finest panels on the market and if you'll get some poor quality display, it may be difficult to get at least similar look - that might be irritating, could spoil the comfort of work, and even might have some influence on the way you see colors on your CG. I also think that it's convinient when the second panel has same vertical size and resolution, so 21" or 24" should be the best  match.

But he's not looking for a graphic-quality monitor.  He has one already.  He just wants to get the desktop and clutter off of the main workspace.  For tools, email, chat, and other crap that's running in the background, any decent large monitor will work.  That said, the Viewsonic and cheaper alternatives are probably 85-90% as good as the higher-end models for even high-end work.  The technology is fairly mature at this point.

Plus, there's the insane cost difference between the bleeding-edge and the almost as good models.  I have a cheap Viewsonic 20 inch that I use at work.  They won't give me a second monitor(company policy is 15-17 inch LCDs, period) so I brought in my own.  Just being able to get the clutter of of your main screen is a godsend.  Well worth the $150 it cost me.

i've ordered the EIZO CG243W today, and I shall keep my Nec 26" for tools :-)

I know that it was not the question but I have changed my mind because the Eizo is really cheap in UK

thanks to all

I used to do that, but I was wasting too much time mousing over to the second monitor to grab them. I found it much more efficient to keep tools as close to the work as possible.

I have CG243W as well and I had to put the second display away as it had quite different spectrum of white compared to the new CG. When they were sitting one next to the other, the EIZO looked as having red tint and the other one a green one - very uncomfortable, at least for me. I have measured spectrum of the white of both (when calibrated to D50) and it was indeed quite different. Not sure if it is caused by different spikes of the CFL tubes or different primaries, maybe bit of both together.

So my bet would be to get EIZO Flexscan with the same panel as second display.
