GF-1 lens questions?
« on: September 23, 2009, 07:18:53 pm »

Perhaps it is too early to ask but in case anyone knows...

Preferring the equivalent focal length that the olympus 17mm lens gives over the panasonic 20mm are their any operational negatives to using the olympus? (Using GF1 with external finder)

In the 50mm (approx) focal length (80 to 100mm equivalent) has anyone used any of the possible prime lenses from panasonic, olympus, sigma etc and if so any recommendations?

Thanks,

Marc

I have a G1 and 8-9 lenses, the two kit, rest manual focus. Manual focus is very easy on G1. In the 50mm aprox range I have a 40mm 1.8 Konica Hexonon, 50mm 1.8 Olympus OM, and 50mm 1.4 Pentax SMC K mount. I prefer the Pentax. On the GF1 I don't know how the focus would be without a good viewfinder, probably OK for more contemplative work, maybe not so good for quick snaps.

From what I've read the Panasonic lens is superior. Good general focal length. I intend on getting one when the dust settles.

Love the G1. Maybe the most fun camera I've owned and I've had from Linhof to Leica. Fun is one thing but results count, the G1 delivers what I ask of it, mostly macros and stitched landscapes.

Well, the two main drawbacks for the Olympus would be its so-so optical performance (the 20mm is a good bit better), the fact that it's about a stop and a half dimmer than the 20mm, and that it focuses more slowly. That said, it's not as if it's a bad lens. Just that the 20mm is better and the fov difference is pretty minimal.

I have not used the Panasonic 45mm macro (actually, very few have...) but given that Leica slapped their name on it, it's bound to be excellent... aside from that, the Olympus 50mm f2 is known to be superb (but won't AF on a Panny camera) and there are a wide range of other 40-50mm primes that are easy to adapt to m4/3, though they will be manual focus. There are some exceptional optics available at bargain prices, if you're willing to manually focus...

Thanks guys.
Presumable the EVF is meant to show exactly what the screen shows so manual focussing with it should be good.

I'm not too bothered about autofocus so perhaps the GF1 body, coupled with either of the 17/20mm primes and then one of the many available fast 50mm rf lenses may make a nice set.
