I was studying on an abroad course in Siena, and one of our weekends happened to be the Palio. After 6 hours of standing in direct 40 degree Celsius sunlight in a crowd that probably rivals dead stars in terms of density, the event started - with the full charge of the mounted Carabinieri - perhaps for an outsider, as exciting if not more than the race itself.

Great motion and composition!  It almost feels like a moving picture.  You've definitely caught the action of the moment.  Nice job.

Your photo is fantastic. When one knows the conditions (hysterical crowd, temperature, noise etc...), one can only applause!

Thank you for all the lovely comments. I haven't posted or subject my photos to critique much in the past, but I've been trying to move onto the next level recently.

This image was totally by happenstance. I didn't expect these results at all. I was just trying to get them in frame with a wide angle (since I was standing right at the edge of the track) and I panned as they were charging. Out of a bunch of mediocre and so-so shots, this one came out best.

I love it, especially the elongation of the rear legs in the horses on the left.  I think that really adds to the kinetic and dynamic action of the shot.  This shot is timeless.

Fantastic photo.

Isn't amazing how it seems it's always the shot you never even considered at the time of shooting that is the one that just pops while the award winning shot you spent time and effort composing and congratulating yourself on while taking it is often so-so?

Andrew's right. Planning is a sure way to produce a ho-hum photograph. It's the gut shots that shine. Great shot!
