Surprisingly this was without a tripod...  ...beats me as to how it came out so clear.
Any thoughts?  Cropping is okay? Compo, color?
Like it hate it?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Good photo.  Good separation of similar colors and texture.  The depth of field is fairly narrow, which makes the sharp parts stand out more than they would otherwise.  You wouldn't want a much deeper DOF here, so it looks like you got it with a little wiggle room to spare.

I get an occasionally good flower photo, but you've been more consistent.  I hope you can do as well with other subjects.

Great lines and very nice saturation.  I agree with Dale.  The DOF you chose is very effective.  I think everything is fine as-is, but if you were to improve it, I would try and tone down the bright area on the right a little bit.  Like I said, though, it's good to go as-is.

I see what you're saying about the DOF.  I certainly enjoy flower photos, so perhaps it is just that the sheer number of snaps I take correlates to the number of acceptable prints that are churned out.  As for other subjects, I can't do people, they ruin everything.  I'll stick to nature for now.

Okay, that is a valid point...I do see what you mean about the right side of the picture, most likely backlighting.  I'll experiment and re-post if I get anything better.  Good looking out, thanks!

I'm sorry, see more of the flower, or pictures from this camera?  And regardless, the stabilization system does seem to be above average (not that I would know, but still).

Well I've had a little trouble with this particular camera, in that is has a fixed 35-420mm lens, and I don't have the close-up attachment...as you can guess, this means taking huge pics from as close as possible and cropping considerably.

These are some of my other ones, nothing special.

If you do use a tripod sometime, don't forget to turn the image stabilizer off.

The first photo is good, shows the flower in detail without being Macro

Only thing I can see is the colour cast

I've removed it (hope you don't mind) to show you what I mean
