Matte cutter
« on: August 12, 2009, 01:42:25 pm »

I'm thinking of getting a matte cutter. The wall-mounted gadget that Michael demonstrates in one of the C2P videos looks spiffing, but I suspect might cost rather a lot of money, so I'll go for something much cheaper. I'm not likely to be doing more than 20 or 30 a year, with the maximum mount size probably about 24x32" and aperture size maybe 17x23".

I'd appreciate any recommendations for something reasonably priced. I'm not terribly dextrous, so something which is at least a little foolproof would be good.

Thanks

Jeremy

Jeremy,

I've used my Alto 4505 cutter for 7 years and have cut a few thousand mats with it, It's easy, consistent and relatively cheap.

Good luck,

Hey Jim....

I didn't know about that one; that looks pretty cool.

I'm pretty happy with the one I have; Logan "Framers Edge"; although without some additional pieces can't cut more than a 5 inch (?) border.  But still really good for my needs.  Wow....I had forgotten how much I paid...yikes....looks like they go for about $375 or so.

Here is the manufacturers website with the product info:

Here is a demonstration on youtube for how to use it:

I use the Logan cutter as well.  Works great for me.  You may, however, run into problems with larger matts.  The largest I cut with the Logan is 16x20.  Any larger, and you may want to find something sturdier.

I use the Logan 750 also and it has worked fine for light volume work for six or seven years.  With any mat cutter, you have to follow the old adage--measure twice, cut once.  I don't have any problem with mats the size you describe.  I'm sure that anyone doing a large volume of work would appreciate one of the deluxe wall-mounted units.

I use the basic Valiani Astra 120 mat cutter. Works fine and Valiani has a good support here in Italy. It has two cutting heads for 90° and 45°

If you want to cut larger mats or just cut matt board down to frame size, consider the Logan Adapt a rule products. I have the 560 which has the guide for the logan knives. I mount on a table use the C clamp at one end and clamp the other end with a large carpenter's type spring clamp to the table top. With scrap under the cut and careful measurement you can cut to 60" (almost)

It's amazing how quickly they go dull.  And when they do, you immediately know it!

There is a new one from Logan  "Logan Platinum Edge Mat Cutter 850"
Also, you might want to shop around for the Logan Framer’s Edge 650. I assume its going to be replaced by the Platinum Edge, so there should be some good deals out there.
I have the 650 and it works great. I buy all of my matting and framing supply's from framing4yourself.com, they have good prices and there relatively close to where I live, which saves on shipping costs, check out the link.

Did a bunch of research a few months ago, and decided on a Logan 450, but before we made the plunge, we inherited an old Altos mat cutter.  Don’t use it nearly as much as we thought we would, and buying mat board a couple of sheets at a time is practically impossible unless you live near a large art center, so that helped to rule out eventually buying the Logan.

The thing I like about Logans is that the cutter slides on rails, while the Altos do not.  We’ve made do with the Altos, but I let her do the actual cutting.  I doubt I could keep a straight line.
