Car Hire costs in Iceland
« on: August 08, 2009, 11:52:06 pm »

Just started looking into hiring a 4x4 next year in Iceland for about a week either side of a tour with Daniel Bergman - holy smoke is it ever expensive to hire a 4x4 over there.

Has anyone found anywhere that is reasonable price wise? Or have any other suggestions for getting around?

I have had a pretty good look on line and it varies between about $2000 and $3000 US for a 4X4 Landrover for a week - ouch.

Obviously, they expect you to bail out their banks which have slipped under an iceberg; don´t you listen to the economic news?

Also, don´t even think of buying a drink.

As much as the Lada Niva might cause sniggering, it can climb a tree. It's much more capable than almost any western off-road or supposedly off-road vehicle out there. Sure, it has it's... idiosyncracies, but it doesn't get any better than that when it comes to off-road performance.

Yes, car hire is really expensive in Iceland, but a lot of other things are too.

You mentioned a Land Rover. Any particular reason for a Land Rover rather than anything else ? Toyota Land Cruisers are more common out there and often are cheaper to hire.
The hirable Land Rovers are often more highly modified for off-road use (which adds to the cost), but will you really need that degree of specialisation ? and have you the experience to utilise it ?

Unless you're travelling with other 4x4s it would be wise to stay on the more commonly used roads and they're all passable with a Land Cruiser. A Land Cruiser is likely to have softer suspension than the Land Rovers, so will give any kit you're carrying, and yourself, an easier time. The first time I visited Iceland I had to get the screw drivers out to tighten loose screws in my panoramic camera far too often

With the economic situation being to volatile it's difficult to know what prices will be like next year. At the moment hiring from an Icelandic company pricing in Krona looks he most economic route, I found SS Car rental https://www.carrentalss.com/ recently when pricing out a trip for this autumn and their rates are much better than the multi-nationals like Avis/Hertz etc. I've not used them myself so can't recommend them yet but they look good on the web.
I hired from a local company in 2001 and got great service. It saved a lot of time at Keflavik not having to queue at the hire desks when picking the car up.

Hi Tim,

Excellent! I only emailed Daniel a day or so ago asking him to book me onto the same tour from the 31st to the 9th.

I am planning to also either book onto the following tour starting on the 10th heading into the Highlands for an additional ten days or go it alone for another week or so with a hired 4X4.

Are you planning to stick around after the tour ends on the 9th?

Unfortunately, I'll have to come back once it's over with Daniel.  In any event I expect I'll be pretty well pooped out by the 9th.

I was just being generic with 'Land Rover' - I dont really mind what sort of 4X4 it is as long as its reliable (and isnt ridiculously expensive).

I was reading on Bruce Percy's website that he actually used buses whilst in Iceland and did his whole trip on 900 UK pounds for more than 3 weeks (albeit a few years ago).

Based on 4X4 hire costs alone I will probably book the additional tour with Daniel in the Highlands rather than go it alone.

Hi All;

I just returned from a 10 day workshop with Daniel.  By unanimous agreement it was a great experience.  Even though the light didn't cooperate with us, Daniel took great care to help us make the most of it.  I lost about 6-7 kg, so my wife said it was worth it <grin>.

Yes, cars are expensive.  One of the participants rented a Nissan station wagon for a day.  $280!  Ouch, at that rate we could have bought one in 4 months.  Gas is a bit expensive by US standards, but not outrageously so (~$US 1.50/L).  If you plan to drive inland and cross streams, you will definitely need a 4X4 with clearance.

Cheers, ...Dave

I was in Iceland the last two weeks of June and rented the smallest RV I could find which turned out to be a Dodge Ram 1500 with a Sunlite camper hooked onto the truck bed.  Cost a fortune (E 1,575 / week) plus linens, pots and pans, etc.  Got 10.5 mpg.    It seemed like a good idea at the time when I checked the cost of hotel rooms and meals, but if I had to do it again I would rent a really small 4x4 and tent camp. If you are going alone or with just one other person they have small 4x4's.  I do not remember the brand but it was Asian [Suzuki?] and smaller than the Jeep Wrangler. I met a guy who had rented one and he had been all over the island and had no trouble crossing rivers.

Good luck.

That's what we did a couple of years ago. We rented a small Suzuki Grand Vitara and used a mountain 4-season tent. The Suzuki is OK for two (with a reasonable amount of gear). I can't remember how much we paid.
