Here are a few different perspectives of the falls, would be interested in everybody's thoughts on which one works best for you. BTW, the cloud formation above the top reminds me of a country.....for those that don't have a map in front of them...the small one beneath the big one looks like Tasmania.

1&2: I don't like the bright sunlight.  I think 1 would have worked on a cloudy day.

3: I really like it, although I still get lost off the top.  If Russ will give me a little latitude, why not try cropping off the white on top? You will lose the entire falls, but it might turn out even better.

4: I wonder how that would look in B&W?

Dave...yep, that bright light bugged me too, but I fully intend to spend some time up there and will optimize best time eventually. At this stage am just hoping to get feedback on my perspective.

4; Had thought about black & White with some others but not this one...good call, here it is.

The B&W is very impressive. Good shot! A very powerful image.

Of the original four, #2 is the only one that works for me. It would be nice to have a more interesting sky, but skies where I live are often white, so that doesn't bother me. I find #1 confusing, the rocks in #3 simply block the view and don't relate to the falls in a meaningful way. The BW version of #4 works, nicely dramatic.

I really like the B&W version of #4, and I thought #1 would also work in B&W if you opened the shadows and darkened the sky some.  I'd probably darken the sky more, but with the small .jpg it was posterizing pretty badly.  Here's a quick mockup:

#3 doesn't work for me; as mentioned already, the rocks at the bottom are too obtrusive.  I do like #2, though.

Two and Three are the better compositions, although I think you would definitely want to shoot in better lighting conditions. On the third shot I like having some foreground interest, but maybe the rocks are a little too prominent. A slightly higher and/or more distant camera position might make the rocks seem more integrated into the scene rather than looming in the foreground as they do.

The last shot is also an interesting perspective, I like the way the water is lit up by the sun while the overhanging rock is mostly in shadow. The B/W conversion doesn't look quite right though, something about the area where the trees are up against the sky.

I prefer #2 & 4.  With the level of detail you captured, I think both would make good monochromes.  The version of #4 you did, though, made the sky just a little too dark.  It looks unnatural where it meets the tree line.  With further editing as you say you plan on doing, you will have some outstanding shots!

I like the second one best and the first photo a close second.  I find the foreground boulders in the third distracting, and the last one does not work for me.

And I think the cloud looks like a bunny chewing on a head of lettuce.

Andrew

I provided comment w/o scanning the replies that followed.  Converting #4 to B&W has improved it significantly, though I agree with the comments about the darkness of the sky and the top trees.

Thanks everyone for the comments....point taken re the dark sky in #4 B&W. I do have the time these days to spend going back at different times and will do, although as the falls face south not sure if it will be possible to get golden hour light on the entire falls. Could be that Dave's suggestion of an overcast day might be best. Have a shot of them with nice light on the top of the falls though.

P.S Any Aussies who know the area, I'd appreciate any info you can provide.

What you ideally want is one of those partly cloudy days, where if you're lucky you can get overcast light on the falls, but blue sky above them.

A definite improvement. The scene looks slightly underexposed on my current display, but I'd have to check on my calibrated display at home to be sure. The reduced contrast of open shade definitely results in a more pleasing image, though.

Check out Empress Falls in the Valley of the Waters, a bit to the west of Wentworth Falls. It's a steep but short hike down but those falls and the one below are excellent on a cloudy day - no sky.

Thanks Nick....I've actually posted a shot of Empress Falls here before under the title of Misty falls (before I became aware of their name), and Sylvia Falls as well. I'd really like to get a shot of Wentworth Falls with early morning or late afternoon light, but not sure if this is possible.....and the fact I have never seen one might suggest this is the case. Was hoping someone might know, possibly during summer? Of course it may be that no-one has been game to take on those steep stairs in the dark, but I doubt this scenario.

Thanks Russ, I have lightened it up slightly after Jeff said it may have been a tad underexposed...I guess that's probably just personal preference though.

Brian,

For a print, Jeff's probably right. On a calibrated LCD monitor I think it was okay. But, as you say, personal preference rules.
