Canon iPF5100 & Epson 4880 maximum print lengths?
« on: July 22, 2009, 05:37:08 pm »

I'm going to retire my Epson 4000 printer and the two new printers I'm considering are the Epson Stylus Pro 4880 and the Canon iPF5100.

After reading about the two printers on many printer forums and printer reviews I'm leaning towards the iPF5100. One bit of information I need is the maximum print length from the Canon printer. I print high resolution panoramas. Printing with the Canon driver through Photoshop CS4, what is the maximum print length of the iPF5100?

My 4000 using the Epson driver had a maximum length 0f 44". I believe the 4800 is the same unless I purchased (which I really don't want to do) a third part RIP like imageprint.  I would love to print longer panos longer than 44" without purchasing a RIP. I'm on a Mac using Leopard 10.5.7.

One other thing, I still have about $400.00 in inventory of Epson Paper. Are their services that can create  custom paper profiles for my Epson paper to use with the Canon printer?

Thanks so much in advance

John

I just checked, and the 16-bit print plug-in for my ipf5000 allows a maximum media size setting of 17x708", which is just under 60 feet long. I don't think you can actually buy rolls that long though.

Thank you Jeff. Your reply has been most helpful. I have bought Epson roll paper up to 100 feet long but I can never imagine making a print

longer than 6 feet.

Thanks again

Not a straight Mac solution but Qimage (Studio) isn't expensive and will break the Epson 4880 print length limit. Poster/Tiles/Banner function as decribed in the Learn by Example 6a of the manual. I have a suspicion that the iPF5100 despite its specs will need that function too. An iPF9000 didn't reliable make that length on its own.

With the iPF9000 I have printed 18' with the plugin from PS. The limiting factor with the driver will be the software used. Vector art will probably work fine but bitmaps may be a different thing at that size. Depends on how low res you can tolerate.

Helmar Dahmer created a small freeware utility that allows printing lengths greater than 44"/111cm on Epson printers. Sorry, PC only. The documentation does not list the 4880, but it might be possible. The post is on DPReview:

Canon printers will print to 18 meters (about 59 feet).
