Does Epson have an exceptional rag mat (roll) paper?
« on: July 20, 2009, 03:58:11 pm »

I have been using Epson's Premium Luster over the past couple of years, but am not happy due to the "bronzing" effect caused by the gloss. I'd like to switch to an (exceptional) heavy weight matte paper. Epson is my first choice, since I use an Epson 7800 printer.

It doesn't appear that Epson offers any matte papers (in roll form). What other company stands out as being the "best" choice for a professional roll paper that will be used to make photo prints that I sell in galleries. I am looking for a high D-Max value of course.

You might want to test samples of Moab Paper's Entrada Rag, which comes in versions with and without OBA's.  Sheets come double-sided and rolls are one-sided:

DMax is decent, obviously not in the same class as glossy papers.

Which brings up a question - if bronzing and (presumably) gloss differential are your only concerns about glossy papers, have you tried any of the glossy baryta papers currently available?  These defects are greatly diminished.

Epson Ultrasmooth fine art is available in 24"x50' rolls, it is a nice matte paper without brighteners. You should also look at H. Photo Rag if you want something with OBAs.

Hi,

I love Epson Ultrasmooth Fine Art for its weight and slightly warm tone. I personally use Super A3 sheets (325g/sqm), but you should be aware that the paper weight is reduced to 250g/sqm in rolls.
Here's the product sheet.

Epson claims the D-max is exceptional, but I haven't had the chance to compare with other matte papers yet. You might want to give Hahnemüle Photorag Ultrasmooth a try as well for comparison.
