This old lighthouse is located at a little island named Ona at the western coast of Norway. I think I got the composition good, but the sky could be a bit more dramatic. What do you think?

Bernt, I looked at the picture before I read what you'd written, and thought "that sky looks rather flat". I think it could do with more interest, as there's quite a lot of it. I like the composition, though.

A couple of suggestions:

1. The underlined numbers on the welcome page don't work (Safari 4, Leopard); they just give blank areas where the photos should be.

2. It might be better to generate your own thumbnails, rather than (I assume) having it done automatically. It's a common problem: the thumbnail gives the impression that the composition of the main shot is very odd indeed. I'm thinking particularly of the one which seems to indicate that you've cut the bride's head off.

I like the compositions as well.

For your consideration I made an adjustment

I "tone-mapped" your photo using the Photomatix plug-in inPhotoshop to punch up the sky (see below), but this is global and affects the entire picture.  Many do not like these effects, but I really do happen to like what it can do for clouds in situations such as you found at the lighthouse.

[attachment=15319:_MG_1955_Edit_Edit.jpg]

I then copied the tone-mapped image as a layer onto your original photo (placed over it).  Then used magic eraser to remove your original sky.  The result below is tone-mapped clouds over the rest of the photo untouched.

I found the overall picture a bit dark, but the sky rather flat.  This is about 2 minutes in Lightroom...

Thanks Jeremy

I will fix that sky. I shoot in RAW, so it can easily be done.

What I don´t understand is what is happening with my website. I use Safari myself, and the thumbnails shows up just as they are supposed to do. I have tested the site in Internet Explorer to, and it seems to be right there to. I use Mac iWeb for my site. I would be happy for a suggestion on how to fix the problem.

I'm a bit puzzled as well. I've re-visited the site, and the underlined numbers do seem to work properly. I'm quite sure that they didn't before! It might be something to do with the route away from and back to the main page, since I do recall having looked at a number of individual shots from the thumbnails before returning.

However, I can reproduce the thumbnails problem. It happens when I click on one of the photos on the home page, but seemingly not when I click on the underlined text (Start lysbildeserie). I've attached a screenshot. Nearly all the thumbnails are obviously bad.

I can't help with resolving the problem: I have minimal expertise in the mechanics of web page design, I'm afraid, just opinions on look and feel. Sorry.

Thanks to Jeremy for letting me know about the problem with my website. I am sure I can find the answer at a user forum.
Also thanks to the rest of you for the tips on how to solve the problem with the boring sky :-)

Bernt,

Nice photo (with the improved sky). I had to look up Ona on a map, as I wasn't familiar with it. I see that it is a bit north of Ålesund. I wondered because my father grew up in Ålesund (actually, Skarbøvik.) I have been there twice, and it is a beautiful area.

I checked your website on four browsers: Opera (which, of course, every Norwegian should use   ), Firefox, Safari, and Internet Exploiter. Evrything I tried worked fine in Safari and IE (on a Windows Vista machine.) On Opera and Firefox, the thumbnails are cropped slightly at the top and bottom, which produces the "headless bride" effect. Opera also gave me a warning about "supported browsers" (being Safari and IE), but Firefox didn't give me that warning. Strange!

Regards,

Eric Myrvaagnes

P.S. An ancestor of mine raised twelve children in the tiny farmhouse that is preserved as an "historic site" in Myrvaagneset.

Hello Eric

Thanks for useful information regarding my website.
Twelve children in a tiny house must have been a struggle, but those were other times

I did some improvements (or at least I hope it is improvements) on the picture last night.
Do you think the picture is better now?

It's better, as there's something in the sky, but I think the blue is overdone. It seems out of keeping with the rest of the image. Could you desaturate the sky just a little, perhaps?

I also preferred your original crop.

I was about to agree with Jeremy, and then I decided to spend some time with your original version, the new version, and Mike's version. My current favorite of the three is Mike's. He uses your original crop, and the sky is neither washed out nor too blue.

I like the vignetting effect he has in the sky, as it seems to accentuate the light house. I also like seeing a bit more detail in the shadows. He may have used the Shadow/Highlight tool in PhotoShop for that.
