V2.4 will show better primarily because the color noise control which defaults to 25 and also causes loss of detail. If you slide it to 0 you'll find about the same results as v1. I think you'll find similar behaviour with DCRAW.

CLoser examination showed that I was wrong. DCRaw created blotch-free jpgs, because it uses a blcak point of 0. The blotchines in CR is the fault of CR's conversion curve (I mean how it converts the linear AD values to logarithmic levels.) When I select a 'Shadows' value greater than a given treshold (sometimes this treshold is 0) the darkest pixels meld and this creates the blotchiness.
But now I know how to fight it!
