Upgrade to OS X 10.5 now or wait for Snow Leopard
« on: July 09, 2009, 12:05:07 pm »

I'm sadly still running 10.4 on my Mac's and it's now running fairly slow as well as being incompatible with a lot of software packages that I want to use in the next few months.

I can cope with it a bit longer but just wondering whether it's worth updating to 10.6 now or wait for the forthcoming Snow Leopard.

What are people's opinions?

Thanks
Chris

I understand that Snow Leopard will be sold as an upgrade only ($29). If you're coming from Tiger, you'll have to purchase box set (Snow Leopard, iLife and iWork). More info here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html

10.4 = Tiger (what you have)
10.5 = Leopard (current)
10.6 = Snow Leopard (forthcoming)

I'd definitely upgrade to 10.5 now rather than wait for 10.6 for two reasons:
1) It does appear from the released information that 10.6 will only be available as an update to 10.5.
2) I don't recommend installing an OS until at least one or two updates have been put out after the initial release. This won't be until late this year. You'll avoid most of the annoying glitches/bugs/temporary-incompatibility.

In the meanwhile you can get used to some of the nice features of 10.5.

Thank you both for your replies.

10.5 it is for the moment then, I can't really live with my computers as they are now so I'll look at getting 10.5 in the next few days.

Thanks

Completely agree about waiting for a few dot releases before upgrading. Also, check your apps for 10.5 compatibility -- you may need to upgrade some programs to works correctly. Lastly, 10.5 is also the last version that will be compatible with PowerPC chips, so if you have a G5 or a PowerBook, this is as good as it gets!!

Good luck!

All of the apps I use now will work with 10.5 and a lot of apps I want/need to use are 10.5 only. I'm using Intel based Mac's.

Thanks
