H2D vs H3D and HCD, HTS 1.5
« on: July 03, 2009, 01:14:54 am »

Is there a real  quality difference  between  Hasselblad H2D 22 and H3D 22 ?  and what are the  main differences ?
Is it possible to use HCD lenses or at least HTS 1.5 ?

thank you

Quality difference would be very small, if at all noticeable.

The H3D MkII has a larger screen, more efficient cooling and a better IR filter.

The H2D's digital magazine cannot be used on a technical camera where the H3DMkI and MkII can.

HCD lenses and HTS will work fine on the H2D.

David
Please note that the the H3D11-50 is not technical/view camera compatible (without a sliding back) as Hasselblad have not yet made it Live view compatible.

Yes, thankyou Dick.

I understand your frustration but we are working hard to implement the feature.  The Kodak 50MP chip is a new design which means accessing Live Video is completely different to the other Kodak sensors.

The original posters question was regarding the 22MP products.

Best,

This is a pure guess, and would probably never be confirmed by any manufacturer, but I suspect it is a combination of too low profit margin (it cannot be any cheaper to build a 22MP back than a 60MP back, apart from the sensor) and too close for comfort w.r.t. th 35mm FF cameras like the Sony A900 and the Nikon D3x. I suppose it is important to the "high-end" positioning that the MF cameras are actually high-end in MP too, and not just the same MP with larger pixels and no AA filter, compared to 35mm.

Many people who bought the 22 would be upgrading, so I would think that anyone who wanted a 22 could buy one on e-bay at a great saving.

...hence my "larger pixels" comment. Note that this is just a rule of thumb; the P65+ apparently has better quality, pixel for pixel, than the P25+, for example.

The H3D-22 can be bought from the procentre for about £5000: http://www.procentre.co.uk/secondhand_Equi...ml#hasselblad_h

More pixels are best, but, if you want a small file size, and your lenses limit your IQ, (which Hasselblad H lenses would not)  then big pixels quickly give you an adequate file, more quickly than a Betterlight scan back could.

if you print nothing larger then A2+ 22MP are enough

Correction-my arithmetic was right, but 594 * 420 mm is A2!

(22,000,000/594/420*25.4^2)2^.5 = 238.5,

So, if you leave a bit of a border, and you think that 240 original camera pixels per inch is adequate, 22 Mpx is OK for A2! ...as you said.

Actually not necessarily...

You have to strike a balance between small pixels (resolution) and larg(er) pixels - dynamic range.

Larger pixels can equal loss of detail and more moire, smaller pixels can equal more detail and less moire IF the lenses can cope with increased resolution.

This is why it is very important to have good quality optics along with a high resolution sensor.

Of course if A2 is going to be max enlargement then 22MP is likely to be more than adequate....

...then we can of course discuss different 'properties' of each sensor.. speed/ISO range/ etc etc.  It is not just about Megapixels.

Best,

David

I had thought
10 mpx - A3
20 mpx - A2
40 mpx - A1
50 Mpx - 24" * 34"

But is my arithmetic correct?
