Firefox 3.5 - Best Color Management Setting?
« on: July 03, 2009, 12:51:49 am »

For the purposes of viewing photography and other images, should  I keep the default setting of color managing only tagged images or switch to color manage all?  Using a NEC 2690 wide gamut display.

Thanks,

Paul

I would recommend enabling management on everything. Not only does it colour manage images, but also HTML/CSS colours. If it isn't tagged, it's treated as sRGB rather than letting the colours go wild.

So, aside from things like Flash, you shouldn't have to deal with terrible colour on the web any more if you have a wide gamut display.

One thing to mention though, since the change from 3.0 to 3.5, they've changed the rendering engine and no longer support ICC v4 profiles, so make sure your display is calibrated with an ICC v2 one.

Last I heard color management was broken in the 3.5 betas, so are you guys saying it's working now?

I'm glad to hear they've finally addressed this, it really bugged me in 3.0.

That's a bummer, are they going to fix this?

There was apparently an issue with ICC v4 profiles looking too dark for some people (it seemed fine here) and then support for v4 profiles was removed, disabling colour management if you were using one as your display profile.

If you use a v2 ICC profile (from what I understand, v4 adds nothing for display profiles anyway) the colour management should work just fine. At least, I haven't had any problems with it so far.

I have seen a few people complaining about it because they're wondering why some images are suddenly looking different in 3.5 compared to 3.0 and want it back the way it was before. This is because in 3.0, the only option was on/off for colour management, with it being disabled by default,  whereas 3.5 now has three options: full colour management, tagged images only (which is the default) or off. If you don't know about/understand colour management, I can see why it might be frustrating to have it on by default now. (especially as you probably have a generic monitor profile set up which is almost certainly wrong)

What was the problem in 3.0? I don't remember there being any issues with that. (I've been running the 3.5 alphas/betas for a long time now though)

No idea. The new colour management system is optimised for speed, but I don't know if that's the reason v4 profiles are no longer supported, or if it was because some people were reporting problems and they didn't have time to fix it before 3.5 was due for release.

It's not often that you lose features with a new version, so it will have been removed for a good reason.

I was referring to your comment about non-photo colors being off in 3.0 for those who have wide-gamut displays (I have an Eizo CG241W).

I decided to try FireFox 3.5, but unfortunately the color management is a total bust for me. Everything is way over-saturated, it's completely ignoring my monitor profile. I checked and Eizo ColorNavigator only support ICC v4 profiles. Which is a bummer because that's the software I have to use to take full advantage of my display's hardware calibration features. I downloaded the latest version of the software for my Spyder3 Colorimeter, figuring I could disable all of the calibration functionality and just have it generate a profile for FireFox. But that still doesn't work, even though the Spyder3 software generates a v2 profile. I tried explicitly specifying the profile to use (both as a file name and a full path), as well as setting the color_management.mode to both '1' and '2', but it still doesn't work. I'm worse off than I was with FF ver 3.
