Live view for Hasselblad H3D11-50
« on: June 30, 2009, 05:29:17 am »

This has come up in other topics, but it deserves a topic of it's own.

I bought the H3D11-50 to use the DCU on the back of my Sinar, with the point-and-shoot adaptor as a bonus.

I have a 10m tripod on which I want to use the Sinar, tethered with live view.

So I was unhappy when I opened the box to discover a note saying that the live video would be enabled "sometime".

When my dealer contacted Hasselblad, the response was that "They hoped that it would be supported in Phocus 1.2"

Phocus 1.2 made no difference as, apparently, the problem is in the DCU firmware.

Why on earth do you expect a 25.000 US$ piece of equipment to work per the spec when it is delivered? The back was only released 6 months ago after all... summer time is here in Scandinavia, don't go and tell the engineers that they need to work late instead of sailing off the West coast (of Sweden/Danemark).

Just being ironic obviously, I feel for you man. As another thread recently went over, these backs are very hard - not to say impossible - to focus critically on view cameras without life view. I was amazed when I found out a few month back that none of these back feature life view in back... I am falling off my chair reading now that it doesn't even work when working thethered on the flag ship of Hasselblad.

When hifi companies dare to charge 30.000 US$ for a pair of high end speakers of which they will sell at most 150 units, at least they make sure that thing works perfectly from day one.

Cheers,
Bernard

Actually it's more like seven months since the camera is delivered. The only support Hasselblad provides are pale statements about work in progress. Reading this after upgrading from a working 39 model is not very satisfying.

Maybe it would be time to concentrate less on price wars or gaining new customers and start deliver the features they already sold and got paid for?

ps Rainer - I love how in this picture (6th one down, green pipes) you are on the NO STEP very top of the ladder, and one of of the lock bars is not even down.
please take care!
or at least take care of that expensive camera...

This is a classic illustration of the advantages of live-view for remote operation of the camera. Unfortunately Hasselblad have not implemented live-view for my camera...

Why have you not insisted that your dealer take your H3D-50 back rather than banging your head against the wall?

This was discussed at length on a different forum...

I suggested Hasselblad might lend me a working (live view) camera in the mean time.

Hasselblad said that they Hoped live video would be implemented in phocus 1.2

Phocus 1.2 arrived without it, and apparently it is a firmware problem.

I have the option to upgrade to the 60 when available, and if that would give me live view, I would do it.

...but David Grover syas that they are working on it, and that he understands my frustration.

Please note that the the H3D11-50 is not technical/view camera compatible (without a sliding back) as Hasselblad have not yet made it Live view compatible.

Yes, thankyou Dick.

I understand your frustration but we are working hard to implement the feature. The Kodak 50MP chip is a new design which means accessing Live Video is completely different to the other Kodak sensors.

The original posters question was regarding the 22MP products.

Best,

David

I would like to have thought that Hasselblad and their suppliers were reputable...

When I was discussing the purchase with my supplier, I told the rep that I wanted the H3D to use the DCU on a view camera, and asked if he could supply the adaptors etc. He said I would need to talk to a view camera specialist... but he was fully aware that I wanted it for view camera work.

When I opened the box and found the note saying that they had not enabled live view, and phoned him... that was the first he had heard of it, but when I asked them to give me my money back, he said I was aware that it did not work when I ordered it.

When can I have a hi-res MFD view camera with live view?

Which brand medium format digital will go CMOS first to achieve Live View on LCD?

David.

It is good that you at least answered the question about live view in another thread. But don't you think that after telling your customers the same thing for seven months it would be time to come up with some real dates or timelines?
I have the strong impression that Hasselblad is playing for time until the clients have forgotten what live view was. Or until the 60mp back (with a new sensor supplier) is released. By the way, is it true that delivery of this back is delayed sigificantly too?
I appreciate that Hasselblad tells us they're working on making a already sold feature a reality. But will it ever work??
