using mask when sharpening in Lr 2.4
« on: June 30, 2009, 02:58:02 am »

Hi everyabody,

perhaps I'm doing wrong, but it seems that I found an issue in Lr 2.4.

When sharpening a picture, I want to use the mask-slider to set the sharpening to a portion of the image only. With earlier versions of Lr I could switch the main view to fit the screen ( see the complete image ) and the small window under details to 100% view. When moving the mask-slider with alt-key pressed, I could see the mask in both views.

Now with 2.4 installed, I can't see the mask in the fit to screen view, but only in the small 100% windows. When I switch the small window to complete view, the mask dissapears, too.

So, am I doing anything wrong or is this a real issue with 2.4 ?

many thanks for future answers !

Robert

No...if you were seeing  preview in the main window, the zoom for that windows must have been 1:1. That's the _ONLY_ way to see any of the Option/Alt screen previews (and the only zoom that the sharpening and noise reduction are rendered).

Sorry, it's ALWAYS worked like that.

Hi Jeff,

many thanks for your very fast answer !

I would assume that my wish was the fasther of the assumtion that it was different in earlier versions of lr. ( perhaps you can use your conncetions to Adobe to have them change this behavior ?).

Best wishes

Actually, it's not a real good idea to change it...the _ONLY_ display zoom that can accurately show 1 image pixel for each display pixel is 1:1. Even then your image will be 2-4 times real size but the fact is that computer displays are low resolution devices. If ACR or LR tried to display noise reduction, sharpening and the previews at anything less than 1:1 the image being displayed on screen would be absolutely guaranteed of being inaccurate. The only question would be by how much because how many pixels are capable of being displayed on screen will be variable hence impossible to predict for accurate screen display.

Sorry, you are just gonna have to learn to live with zooming in to accurately set anything in the Detail panel...

Jeff, I don't want to sharpen in a different view than 1:1, but first I sharpen all the image in 1:1, and then I want to mask only a portion of the image to be the former sharpening applied to.

And for this, it would be a good idea to see the whole image to separete the background from the main-part of the image by creating the mask.
