Keywords in different languages
« on: June 23, 2009, 04:13:58 am »

Keywords in different languages are not an argument for english speaking countries. However, I'm curious if it is possible to manage a keyword list in two languages with lightroom. The whole keyword list can be exported, but once translated is it possible to assign the translated keywords automatically back to the original images?

If you use the synonyms feature, yes. Add the translations like this:

Landscape
    {Paesaggio}
Lake
    {Lago}

I suggest you add a couple of synonyms through LR, then export the list and add a few more synonyms in Notepad, then import and see the results.

Timothy Armes suggested a possible workflow with his plugin LR/Transporter:

I gave you the answer, not a workaround.

Thanks John, it works. I'm coming from Imatch, probably I have first to become comfortable working with Lightroom after using the IPTC editor from Imatch: http://www.photools.com/imfs_0008.php

Thomas, I asked a few users with similar requirements. Some do as I suggested with synonyms, while others list both the English and the non-English keywords. But the best thing about the synonym method is you can update the list outside Lightroom and keep all the work done on the existing images.

You can't search for synonyms through the Library Filter panel, but synonyms are targeted if you use smart collections to group images.

Thanks John, I'm making progress!

Looking to edit the keyword list outside of Lightroom I tried a spreadsheet as seen on http://lightroomsecrets.com/2009/04/buildi...e-of-lightroom/
Are you aware of other types of editors to work on the keyword list? Working in Excel is easier as doing the typing in UltraEdit.

No, Excel's fine. just make sure you test the process via Excel before doign lots of work. And I don't think Gene shows synonyms which are marked with {} .
