Finland in July
« on: June 21, 2009, 02:54:40 pm »

My brother is getting married in Saarijarvi in Finland on 11 July.  Despite protestations that weddings are best left to professionals, I'm in charge of photography.  I'll be shooting film so could really use some pointers as to what films I should be taking.  My current stock is Neopan 400 simply because it's so cheap at the mo - I'm paying £1.20 a roll or so.  I use Plus X as a slow film (but live in Britain and rarely need it!) Tri X is my preferred medium speed film and I prefer it for heavy pushing too - at 6400 it's much better than Delta 3200.  I will be testing Neopan 400 pushed off the earth next weekend (no spools with me at the mo!)

I will be shooting from approx 11am through until the next day using a Leica with 35mm lens and a Yashicamat.   I understand that far north, it doesn't really get dark - given this, if Neopan does not work out for pushing, do I need to worry about a 1600+ film?  Similarly, Is there much point in taking out a slower film?

Many thanks

Charly

Well,

it all depends if the weather is sunny or cloudy.

If its sunny day (and therefore sunny night) You will get use for slower films between 5.00 - 21.00. Sun is bright everywhere...

At the night time You need something faster since the shadows get longer and the light will be dim between 21.00 -4.00.

But if the weather is cloudy/rainy You will absolutely need something like 400 - 800 ISO. And in church also. And fast lens won´t hurt.

regards, Sami

No church so pray it doesn't rain - I'm wearing silk!  Do you have any suggestions for ordering film as I'm thinking of having it sent to the hotel rather than schlepping it through x ray at the grief that is Heathrow airport.  Thanks

Don´t know about film since after 1999 have not used film.
How about You buy it from Your hometown and mail it to hotel?

In my 20 years+ career I have not seen x-rays to ruin any of my films.
My assistant always took the bags of rolls (exposed)  to cabin and some days we went through 4-5 security checks.
No harm never. But maybe new machines are different?

9/11 meant newer, harsher x-ray machines.  I've never had a film ruined but seen evidence of mild fogging.  My concern with posting is that they will x ray parcels as well but will look into this.
