Now you talk about stitching in general.
But the goal is not stitching as self purpose but a certain gain in resolution (initially "Dick R." was talking about 24 * 36" @ 360 ppi).

As far as being able to stich fewer frames, yes to some extend
yes... I am talking about 2, 3 or maybe 4 captures... or a certain amount of captures to produce roughly a 80MP file in a conventinal image format (3x4; 2x3, 4x5...).
Easy to do with MFDB and loads of resolution.

One thing about stitching with DSLRs like Canon and Nikon... The only success I have had with stitching is when the camera is sideways in portrait mode because of the vignetting and lens distrotion at wide angles. (I've been stitching with my 70-200mm to avoid lens distortion) ... Granted, this is on full frame sensors and is less prevalent on crop cameras. Sure you could DxO and Lightroom the vignetting effects but it is such a sweet spot you have to hit in order to get it just right.

Having the vignetting removal in Phocus, it is more time shooting, less editing time and I can go right to the stitching. Also, I can do stitches with my camera horizontal. The lens correction also helps... Another perk to the Hassy.

But back to my question.  Since Hasselblad has abandoned those of us with 39MP cameras  by not offering the historical upgrade pricing(and yet they offer a 50MP to 60MP upgrade path), and they were recently offering "demo" 39MP rigs for around $16K with a 6 month warranty, we're now forced into the resale market to get rid of our current rigs AND faced with a severe dollar loss (at least for those of us who bought in at the near retail price of $22K).  Considering the financial loss we'll take, is the improvement in image quality really worth it?

The original pricing for the Hasselblad H3DII-39 was $33,995 and the price for the H3DII-50 was $39,995.  Part of the reason for dropping the prices to $21,995 and $27,995 respectively was to eliminate the complicated upgrade process.  We decided to give the photographer the choice of still getting the upgrade cost, but with the ability to keep their old gear as backup or to sell on the open market.

Old System:

H3DII-39 $33,995
Cost to upgrade to H3DII-50 $23,500

Total Cost = $57,495  And you don’t get your old system

New System:

H3DII-39 $21,995
H3DII-50 $27,995

Total Cost = $49,990 + YOU GET TO KEEP YOUR OLD SYSTEM!!!!

Hasselblad 39MP verse 50MP - anyone compare for Landscape work?

And just how many of us out there can afford two Hasselblad systems in these times?
I am certainly not one, and I doubt there are many.
To my mind, the logic is flawed.

And this is a logic you did not follow through on the 50-60MP upgrade path you offered.

BUT please, back to my original question - anyone use the HTS for landscapes, and if so, results on DOF/Tilt feature?

Then buy the 50MP and sell your old system, you'll still be better off than you were with the old upgrade matrix.

Nick,

If one pays $21,995 for the 39MP kit, goes to sell when Hasselblad is now selling same kits but demos WITH 6 month warranty for $16,000, just how much will one get for the kit they paid $21,995 for?  Say $12,000 since warranty is NOT transferable from user to user.

Naw, that won't work - here is what's on the Hassie site as of this morning:
P/N Model MSRP CPO Price
70380520 H3DII-22 - No Lens - Digital camera kit  $13,995.00  $9,495.00 Price Reduced!
70380510 H3DII-22 with 80mm lens - Digital camera kit  $15,995.00  $10,495.00 Price Reduced!
70360541 H3D-39 No Lens -  Digital Camera kit  $29,995.00  $11,995.00 Price Reduced!
70360508 CFH22 Digital back - Fits H2 & H2F only  $24,995.00  $7,495.00 Price Reduced!
70360527 CF39 Single Shot Digital back  w/ adapter  $19,995.00  $13,495.00 Price Reduced!
70370527 CF39-MS Multi Shot 39 mpxl digital back  $37,995.00  $16,995.00 Price Reduced!
H-System Digital Cameras
3023080 H Series 80mm lens  $2,040.00  $1,249.00 Price Reduced!
H- Lenses

Thus, today you can get H3D-39MP with 80 lens direct from Hassie today with six month warranty for $13,244!
Just how much more is a H3DII body going to bring - not much.

In short, today we are directly competing with Hasselblad on a very rapidly depreciating asset.
No way can anyone pay the dealer near retail for a new kit, yet the dealer margins are relatively small.

What I'm say is let the new buyer into MFD beware of the financial consequences they are locking themselves into!!

Looks like I'll be shooting my H3DII-39 for a long time to come unless there is an offering from Hasselblad for a "trade up" or the 50MP begins to show up on their Pre-Owned site!

Jack, I understand your points, but the fact is you are still financially better off with the new pricing than you were with the old upgrade scheme.  Even if it is impossible to sell your 'old' H3D (unlikely), you a) Have a backup and  Once again have spent less money.

If I were you, I'd not even think about a 50MP camera. I don't think the difference between 39MP and 50MP makes or breaks a picture. If you'd invested in the stock market two years ago, your investment would be worth far less today than it was then. Your 39MP camera still takes pictures as well as it did when you bought it.

Your reaching the same conclusion I'm reaching - the old rule of "deminishing returns" = reach a point where the added cost is not justified by the increase in return.

As to the stock market  - got out 3 weeks before the 2002 pull back, and got out before this current "crash".  Seeing those market tops was not heard if you removed emotion from the equation.
