5DII won't fire flash in LiveView mode

Has anyone else noticed when using the 5DII with Liveview turned on that it won't fire a strobe attached with a sync cable? As soon as I turn Liveview off it's works just fine.

I have tried the different Liveview settings such as "Stills + Movie" and "Stills Only" but neither seems to work. I did however try using the 580EX on the hotshoe and the Canon flash fires.

Am I missing something here?

I noticed this too. I don't know why the flash doesn't work.  I'll try the hotshoe.

I decided to email Chuck Westfall of Canon USA and he came back with this helpful response. It appears that I had forgotten the first rule of mastering any piece photographic equipment - "READ THE MANUAL"  


"Hi, Derryck:

A note at the bottom of page 120 in the English edition of the EOS 5D Mark II Instruction Manual indicates that non-Canon flash units will not fire in Live View mode unless Silent Shooting is set to Disable. Please check your camera to ensure that you've adjusted this setting accordingly.

Dear Chuck,

Thanks again, we're shooting tabletop, couldn't figure out how to fire the studio strobes (pocketwizards).  You the man, saved us alot of trouble!
