Question on going from Lightroom to my plug ins and back?
« on: June 05, 2009, 06:11:44 am »

I use multiple plugins from Lightroom. My question is when I send my first raw image from Lightroom to lets say Define/2 for noise reduction and it does its thing and comes back to Lightroom as a tif. Can I keep doing this with all the plug ins until I am done with all the editing and then save it just once? After the define edit I might go to Viveze then to Sharpener Pro and then to Genuine Fractals 6. After the first image is changed from a raw to a tif I wanted to make sure each of the edits to that tif are all on the same tif and that I am not getting a new seperate tif every time I go back and forth.
Thanks in advance .

If you did get multiple tiffs, wouldn't it be pretty obvious?

Yes you can go to these programs.  However, it's my understanding that you should use Genuine Fractals before output sharpening.  Personally, I would round trip to PS and use all these programs.  This way you can keep these actions organized on differret layers, combined with other PS actions, and saved in one file.  I can't tell you how many times I have regretted going to far or not far enough with a Nik filter only to find out I have flattened the layer and can't undo.  Also, you can bring the image back to LR as a PSD, which is smaller than a tif.  Of course, even saved as a tif is smaller than having several tifs on that file--that is a lot of HD real estate.

I purchased the Nik package as Lightroom plugins, they do not work in photoshop. I guess the question is still the same . If I go from Lightroom to Viveza back to Lightroom to Define 2 back to Lightroom and finally to Genuine Fractals 6 and then back to Lightroom with the same file is everything that I did in the plugin's still on that final tif in Lightroom?

Yes.

Thank you. The reason I asked, is that everytime the image comes back from one of the plugins as a tif all of the sliders are zeroed out in Lightroom which may be normal.

You might contact Nik, because I have them all and they all work within LR or PS CS4.

Everything is zeroed out because the file is being treated as a new file.  That is why I use multiple filter from within PS, which gives you one tif that can contain everything you did to the file.

Nik has 2 packages. The expensive one is  $599.00 for Lightroom and Photoshop. The Lightroom package that I purchased was $299 but only works as a Lightroom plugin. This was a brand new offering from Nik only out last week.

To address the zeroed out sliders what you are saying is regardless of where all of the sliders are when your tif's come back into Lightroom they have still retained  all of the editing you have done with all of the plugins regardless of how many times you have reedited the tif?
