It's about time. For Pete's sake, why wasn't this included in the first place? I haven't bothered to shoot 5D video thus far because I can not deal with the work arounds. The whole time I have been thinking it's like giving your kid a new car: "Here you go son, a new car! But there's no steering wheel, gas pedal, or brakes. You just put it at the top of a hill and let it roll!!"

Meanwhile, Nikon is firing people:

The firmware is due to be released on June 2nd.

I wonder why it was announced ahead of this date, it would be better to say 'OK, guys here it is...'. PR spin I suppose, trying to make some mileage out of a bad situation.

Good news though.

pdn had a post a couple of days ago about a guy who wrote a hack for his 5DII....they mentioned he would make it public soon....i am guessing canon did not want people to take matters into their own hands:)...either way, the rumor about this firmware update has been floating for a while....

Nice to see Canon making a significant, and much needed, improvement to the 5Dii's video capability, although it will still lack manual audio level control from what I can see.

The problem now will be using those controls effectively.
What's needed next is an OCP (operational control panel (to use broadcasting terminology)) to allow controls to be adjusted whilst shooting.
Maybe someone will develop a unit that uses the usb socket ?
