filter holder for 19 mm
« on: May 18, 2009, 02:12:58 pm »

Hi,

In order to get myself a really good wide angle, I recently bought a Leica 19 mm (type II) from ebay. 2 problems are however testing the smile on my face now. At first nobody has the novoflex adapter in stock in order to mount the lens on my 5D (after two weeks of licking it I would also like to take pictures with it...). Second is my growing fear that there will be no possibility to use a filter system without vignetting. Concerning the last complaint, my last hope seems to be the modular filterholder from LEE, which grabs itself around the outer barrel instead of on the filterthread.
Please help me out!

Cokin make a similar style in their X pro series.  It's phenomenally expensive.

Hey Situgrrl,

Interesting you shoot film, what's your particular reason for this? I abandoned my analog eos less than 1 year ago (it's still yelling my name whole night long). OK here it is; I regret dumping it and I want to hear you say "pick it up again and feed it some Tmax"!
Love your images

Thank you very much, like anyone, I'm a glutton for compliments!

Unfortunately, I can't speak for your old EOS and tell you you made a mistake - to my mind, a choice between a digital and film auto SLR, the digital wins hands down in every situation.  Other's my feel different and if film in an EOS is good for them, there is some fine equipment at rock bottom prices to satisfy their demands.

I shoot using an M4-P with a 35mm lens and I traded a 30D with 3 lenses for it.  Loosing all of that flexibility for such a limited use camera was a huge decision and one that I don't regret for one moment.  I miss the convenience of digital immensely though - and had I had the money, would have bought an M8 instead.  I did get an Ixus thingy but that was stolen in Sri Lanka along with my photos and various other things.  I've not yet replaced it.

The decision behind going back to film with entirely financial and tied to the decision to buy a Leica after a rational analysis of both my photographic style and my long term love of a Canonet.  I think that the reaction to a man touting an SLR and a woman doing so is quite different.  I found myself not taking pictures in preference to getting out the EOS.  I found myself picking up a camera older than me when I wanted to go out shooting.  Keeping the Canon made no sense.  The crop factor of an M8, even had I the money, is touch and go, the RD-1's 1.6 crop ruled out faster lenses and, knowing I will trade back to digital, the Leica badge holds value better than Zeiss Ikon.

I don't deny liking film though.  Even after 12 years of developing my own, there is something magical about pulling images on wet celluloid out of a spool.  I suspect that it's this that you miss and are seeking justification for....in which case - do it!  All I suggest though is that you get hardware that will enable you to shoot in a manner that would be different you your digital gear - a TLR, perhaps a 'blad or RB67.  If I had the money, I'd be looking carefully at the Fuji 67 folder.

Scanning it though is such a pain and it's why my website has not been updated in ages!  I'm looking forward to the Olympus micro 4/3 camera.....but I'm not promising I'll part with that Leica!

Thanks for your generously explaining camera sociology!
It's always interesting how people vary in 'sensing' camera equipment, although I guess only few people wouldn't like the touch of an M-system Leica like yours.
Concerning the filter system for the 19 mm, I think the cokin option you mentioned will be my last hope since the local LEE dealer said he couldn't help me out.
Beside the price, the size of it is so huge that I'll be distracting airliners by using it!
Everything for the image...
Cheers!
