Is there a way to sync catalogs?
« on: May 09, 2009, 02:45:42 am »

I understand the ability to have all the images in one catalog so its easy to find but I need to have all the files & its catalog in its own folder like Raw shooter used to have it, that way I can take out a dvd & get going without hunting for the path to locate the images.

From master catalog I export the sub catalogs without the raw images & work on sub catalog & do the final image processing on this but once done I want the same setting in my master catalog to show the final edits.

Basically I want that the 2 catalog remain in sync with any change I make to either one.
Is it possible to do that?

Regards

Hi Ranjan!

Yes, you can do this but I suggest you settle on a workflow to prevent yourself from getting confused and frustrated. It will be hard to keep track if you allow editing to go on in both the Master and Sub catalogs. However, the process is the same.

If you have done some editing in the Sub catalog that you want to synch up to the Main catalog then open the Main catalog and choose Import from catalog.... The resulting dialog will let you point to the Sub catalog with the edits. You can choose to overwrite the information in the Main catalog or create copies. It's up to you how you want to handle that.

Once imported then the two catalogs are in synch.

Why is it so is there any danger of loosing the edits.
MY work flow is simple as follows.

1. Import the shoot in master catalog
2. do selection & star rating & basic metadata
3. export the new shoot as its own catalog keep in the sub folder on the hdd

4. Now open the new exported catalog & do all the fine editing & tweaking
5. send proofs to client
6. convert final images as per the job requirement
7. once the job is printed & overall finished I sync the catalog with master catalog to show the same images in master catalog for later reference.
8. I then burn the images & the catalog on DVD (some would require multiple dvds)

just as precaution I will always sync the master catalog to sub catalog (Is there any danger in that?)

I followed your suggestion & see the catalog import dialog which ask for
replace> nothing
replace> metadata & develop settings only
replace> metadata, develop settings & negative.

In my case I should choose the 2nd option since I am not moving the negative files on the disk, i have only changed the develop settings in the individual catalog.

Is that right?

Yes. You are basically recreating the data surrounding the files and not the files themselves.

Thanks a lot,
I finally did it, so now onwards I would work around this work flow.
Working on a smaller catalog is much faster.

I get best of both worlds.
