Best aperture for Canon G10?
« on: May 07, 2009, 04:58:09 am »

I just purchased a Canon G10 to use while I am traveling. I have never seen a camera where the minimum aperture is f8.  I don't have time on this trip to test the camera, and so am wondering what is the best aperture to use for maximum resolution. I will be shooting in manual mode on a tripod with remote release.

My personal G10 delivers best resolution between f3.2 and f5.6 in wide angle.

So if you want large DOF, choose about f5.6, if it isn't very important stay between f3.2 and f4.

After f4, if not before, it's diffraction limited, meaning resolution diminishes.  In my experience, for best sharpness don't go smaller than f4.5.  I agree that by f3.2 or f3.6, it's hitting it's peak.  Also, if you want to see a tremendous difference in your photos, try developing the RAW images with DXO Optics Pro.  The difference is remarkable -- almost like having two different cameras!

Hi,

Is that as opposed to DPP? In what way is it better? Can DXO also correct the distortion etc .

Thanks, Ivan

To my eye, it's best at f/2.8-f/4, at least in the center:

It's amazing how much sharper the images are using the DXO lens "softness" feature (which I set to the default of "0"), than without, especially with the G10.  Also the color and microcontrast is much better.

Yes, DXO will automatically correct distortion if you want it to.

I agree. Thank you for the tests.
