Help with Strange happenings
« on: May 02, 2009, 09:51:36 pm »

I recently changed out a few components of my system.  I replace a sony Artisan with the NEC 2690(because the sony was giving up the ghost) and spectraview II and I replace a nvidia quadro 3400 video card wth an nvidia geforce 285 card (increasing video ram from 256 to 1 gig and a faster gpu to use CS4 features more effectively).

After doing these changes I find myself unable to use prophoto RGB.  when I open an image in Photoshop CS4 in the prophoto color space it displays on the screen too dark.  As I drag it in CS4 the colors shift to look ok, but as soon as I let off the mouse, it goes too dark again.   This does not happen if I use AdobeRGB or a smaller space, but always happens with Prophoto.   I have tried everything I can think of and am now crying out for help.   I turned of GPU assistance, still happens,  made sure I had the newest drivers.

Any ideas would really be appreciated.

The only difference I can think of is that ProPhoto uses a different gamma to Adobe RGB and sRGB - but I can't think why that would be causing an issue.

Does the same problem happen with a Colormatch RGB image?

I see that you are using SpectraView II to calibrate the monitor.  Since you were previously using the Sony Artisan, were you using its dedicated calibration hardware/software?  Or did CS4 install Adobe Gamma loader?  I'm wondering if you have competing software loading different monitor calibrations.

If you are using windows, you can run MSCONFIG to see what's in your startup.

Thanks all for your comments.   I was careful to fully uninstall the artisan software and am now only using the calibration puck which came with Specraview II.   If it was a general issue I would see it all the time.  It is only with a wide gamut space.   My guess is it is a bug in the nvidia/cs4 code which attempts to coordinate between the gpu memory and the system memory and so for gamuts wider than the display gamut (of which the 2690 is close to adobe rgb) is has a problem which results in the darkened colors when my document is in prophoto rgb.

still probing as I want to use prophoto rgb because my printer the epson 9900 can print colors beyond adobe rbg and why should I limit the options.

thanks again,  John

Have you tried updating the nVidia video driver?

Yes indeed,  I am at the most current version of the driver.

John, did you humour me and check the behaviour of a ColormatchRGB image?

I think Damo's on the right track with the gamma issue.

Sounds like you get a different gamma when Photoshop CS4 uses the GPU for on-screen manipulations, but not the right one when rendering without the GPU.

I don't know what lies in the Preferences | Performance | GPU settings area; does the Advanced button give you any sort of gamma control?

Step one might be to get the GPU rendering and the regular rendering to agree (even if both are dark), and then to hunt for the root cause (video card settings, look-up-tables, etc., for example) that would fix both.

Sorry I can't be of more help, (my video card is too old and CS4 doesn't recognize it as suitable for acceleration.)

An update.
I tried using colormatch and is showed the same issue as ProphotoRGB.    Pursuing the Gama idea, I found under the GPU settings a section in the advanced control labled "Debug" within this there is an option to select "Gamma Corrected".

This seems to have solved the color display issue, but now I am not able to smoothly drag a window.    When a window is moved, the window frame does not fully redraw.

It looks like there are some issues to be worked out between the nVidia driver (my current version is 182.50) and CS4.

thanks for all the ideas.

John
