How necessary are release for shots of bridges and roads where a building is in the background etc.

If a person is recognizable you should get a release. Perhaps you can contact your stockagency to find out their policy, mine is very strick with these things. If you clear your strategy with the agency you will spare yourself shooting lots of images that will be rejected.

It depends on several things.  Some agencies insist on having property releases before they accept the image some don't.  It also depends on whether you sell as RF or  licensed.  

Also, if the buildings are not prime subjects in the image, then usually you get away from needing a release but if, say, you feature an iconic building as the prime subject and the image is used in an advertisement, you may end up in trouble if sold without release.  That has been my guidance when selling stock.
