Did Crane change Museo Silver Rag ?
« on: April 30, 2009, 05:10:13 pm »

I just got a new box and noticed that it didn't have the texture of my older box, felt thinner and had a sheet of interleaving paper between each sheet.

Museo isn't distributed by Crane any more. I wonder if that has something to do with it.

When I got a box about 2 months ago, it was 'new' like that.  I'm not overly crazy about it but I'm still discovering my likes/dislikes WRT different papers and mfgrs.

Other then the difference  in texture and weight, how is the color?   Any other comments on the "Newness" of Silver Rag?

I think the only reason I noticed is I just used up the last of my older box and opened the new one. The only change I noticed was that the print seem sharper and the paper was flatter.

Silver Rag may indeed have been updated. I was suppose to test some beta product a number of months ago, but because of my shoot schedule, wasn't available during the time period they needed. Not having seen a "new" box (I have a lot of "older" Silver Rag at the moment), I can't really comment. The sheet in between, though, is something they have used with the excellent Museo Portfolio Rag paper. It actually came in handy when I recently put together a folio of five images for a client. The "fly sheets" kept the prints from potentially scuffing each other. So the addition is a plus in my book. I believe they were testing a new coating that allowed for sharper ink dots and less paper curl. Crane actually still makes the actual paper, while the coating is made by the same original company (InteliCoat) which made it before, and took over the Museo name and product line.

Personally, I've tried almost all the "fibre glossy dried matte" papers out there, and still think Silver Rag is tops in the category.

Now that some time has passed, does anyone have any definitive information on this change? How does the "new" silver rag differ from the "old" silver rag. I need to purchase a box but don't want to spend $120 only to find out that I don't like the changes.
