HP ADVANCED PROFILING SOLUTION do I need it?
« on: April 20, 2009, 03:51:57 pm »

While I am waiting for my Z3200 to show up I was wondering if I should consider purchasing the HP ADVANCED PROFILING SOLUTION.
I already own Monaco Profiler Pro and a Spectrolino/Scan.
Sounds like I am going to be running mostly 3rd party material like Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Satin, Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Pearl  and Fredrix 777 canvas to start so I will need to make my own profiles.
From what I have read on the APS looks like it's a stripped down version of PM5 with i1 monitor calibrator and it's all tied into the printer.

Any thoughts?

I have a z3100 and have bought the APS.  It works good but if you already own other soft/hardware i would not buy it.
Already you can make a 440 patch with the spectro in the machine. So i guess you have enough data to choose from for making a decent print.
There will be probably a lot more colour infidelity in the stages before printing.

The 3100 uses a much different HP profiling set up than does the 3200.
APS on the 3100 does indeed use a hybrid PM app but is different in that it uses a version 6 library for creating the profiles.

APS for the 3200 uses Monaco libraries which are , I assume, from Profiler Gold but modified of course for APS and the ESP.
The HP Color Center Profiles on the 3200 are really greatly improved over the 3100. I saw some areas that were better with APS but nothing saying that they were not at a pro level where as the 3100 are not as well tuned for photography outside of matte paper.

The integration with the ESP and APS is ideal. I cannot say it will give you better results over a Spectroscan but will say it is very easy to keep consistent prints and measurement values onboard without extra time to set up the spectroscan.

I have an i1 and PM5, and a ColorMunki but don't use them for the 3200 profiling as it has APS. The Color Center profiles are in all the tests I have done on a high level as well, so I see no reason to profile outside of the printer.

A. Diallo wrote recently on how to use charts with more patches with APS where you could use the 1728 patch chart or more if you think you gain precision.

Thanks for your input Neil, Very interesting that APS for the 3200 uses the monaco library, which I have also felt made better rgb profiles then PM5 in the past. Hmm I think I may get it. Can you point me to A.Diallo post on how to make 1728 patch chart? This is the chart I have been using for the past 2 years and very happy with the results.

Thanks for the link.
Question is Bill Atkinson 1728 i1 patches the same 1728 patches that Monaco Profiler use?
This is what I have been using for the past 3 years and very happy with.

Just curious I installed the HP ADVANCED PROFILING SOLUTION - and it recognized my Gretag Eye-One Display.
Is it possible to buy only the Software Activation Key from HP without the Gretag Eye-One?

No but you can sell the i1 or the HP i1 after. Just know it records the serial of the i1 whether or not it is the HP or OEM into the software registration. So don't lose your i1 afterwards or sell or lend the wrong one as APS will not run without it.

For what it is , the price is actually very reasonable. It makes a fully automated profiling package with a lot of Profile Maker technology, some of the other X-Rite automated readers , all for a price of not much more than the puck and a software kit to turn your Z into an automated reader, normally costing thousands.

After owning a Z3200 for the past 3 months, I have to say that APS yields ever so slightly better profiles thatn the out of the box profiling capabilities of the printer. I have been very very surprised at just how good the profiles are with the limited number of patches that are used to create them. I do have APS, but if I had to do it all over again I would likely omit it.
