Rolleiflex 2.8F (Planar) Gold
« on: April 20, 2009, 02:47:30 am »

Hi,

I have for sale a Rolleiflex 2.8F, which is, as you certainly know, the most interesting classic TLR every built and the top of the range, forgetting some limited edition models.
It's also one of the most legendary cameras ever built, and one of the most important in the history of photography.
I'll pass on more details about how great these cameras are, because i'm sure Rolleiflex fans know everything about them.

A lot of people still prefer them to the most recent FX and GX versions, and i'm one of them.

It is equipped with the most desirable and valuable Carl Zeiss Planar 80mm f/2.8 lens. The Schneider Xenotar is also an amazing lens but, cameras equipped with the Zeiss, were more expensive when new and command higher prices in the used market nowadays.

It comes with coupled light meter, which was an optional.

I'm not a specialist in focusing screens, but i believe the one equipped in this camera is a later and brighter model. It's certainly not a Beattie or Maxwell, but maybe a Rollei one. It's a grid-type screen and much better than the one mounted in a 3.5F i already had.

This particular copy was modified for a collector and all the chromed parts were gilded in pure 24K gold. The original leather was also replaced by dark brown crocodile leather. It's an unique copy in the world and the modification was done outside the Rollei factory.

It's not an original Aurum, but it still excellent for collectors or real photographers.

According to the serial number, it was made in 1960.
Later i'll post serial numbers of both lenses and body, as well as some pictures.

Original lenses cap and brown leather half-case (with strap) are included. The case needs to be stiched on the sides, but it is in good condition.

Condition:

Cosmetics: very good condition for it's age, with usual signs of use. The focusing screen has a coule of marks, which doesn't affect the viewing at all.

Optics: Bright and clear. No fungus, no dust, no scratches and no oil in the aperture blades. The coating looks perfect in both lenses.

Mechanics: Everything is working perfectly, including the shutter, film advance and light meter. The camera was checked by a technician before the seller sent it to be, and he said eveything was perfect.

I bought this camera very recently, for personal, use and i really love it, however i'm selling it for two reasons:

- Suddenly I decided to invest in a Leica M (including a M8) system and i need the money. I'll buy another one soon, for sure, since it's my favourite medium format camera and probably my favourite camera ever.

- Since I do a lot of street photography, I need something more low profile. This one, having a lot of gold, calls too much attention sometimes.

Yesterday, I spent the day shooting with it, and couldn't stop smiling.
I had a hard time deciding if I you should sell it or not, but i think a normal version would be better for my style of shooting and i need the the money at the moment, if i want to go seriously with the M8.

I'm asking 960eur (NOW 840)for it, including packing and shipping inside the European Union. That's the usual price for a normal 2.8F in good used condition and, altough this one is not an Aurum, it still a very beautiful camera, using very expensive materials.
I also can send it to the USA, Canada, Australia and Asia, but i need to check for the difference in the shipping cost. Buyer will have to pay that difference in those cases and should expect to pay import taxes.

Thank you for your interest,

Hello David,

I'm interested by your ad, can you send me some photos of the camera. Has it been serviced ? Is the flash sync still working ?

Faithfully,

stephane.

Well, i still have a couple of minutes before leaving so, maybe It's better to answer now.

You can check this link to my flickr gallery, where you can see pictures:

Please click on the last link for more pictures. If you want even more, please let me know and I'll shoot some more.

Stephane,

I was told the camera was serviced and all the shutter speeds were working perfectly, however I can say this is true for all the shutter speeds till 1sec (1sec included). Anyway, I don't think you'll need to use longer exposures than that, except if you are a landscape photographer. Most of the classic Rollei's on sale have inaccurate shutter speeds from 1/30 so, I think this is not a big deal.

Unfortunately I didn't test the flash synchronization and, at the moment, I don't have the equipment for that.

Thank you once again.

Regards,
David

P.S. - If you have some other questions, you can also contact me using my e-mail, which i check several times everyday: jimlizard@gmail.com
