Wearout period for PO DBS?
« on: April 16, 2009, 10:02:10 am »

Hello everybody,

As my 1-year warranty period draws to its end, having shot as few as 3000+ images with my refurbished P30 back, I'm wondering how long more could I expect from this back to work with proper color rendition and overall acceptable performance?

Thanks in advance for your input.

- The back has no moving parts.
- The CCD sensor does not suffer from reducing sensitivity (as some CMOS sensors do)

So if treated reasonably well (they can take a beating, but ideally you keep them from bangs, drops etc) they will last a very long time.

That said, you can get a warranty extension before you're warranty expires to reduce your anxiety. You can do that through any dealer you choose to do business with.

Yes and also the CF card ejector mechanism and the CF Card door. I should have been more specific as I usually am and say that taking an exposure is without mechanical movement.

I have seen a button go bad (exactly one in the last two years), so your point is actually completely salient.

my Sync socket shorted out 5 weeks after my 3 year warranty expired on one of my backs.  Not sure how it happened since I only use Radio Slaves to sync.

The back has been at Phase in Denmark for over 3 weeks now and Calumet told me in advance that it could cost anywhere from $625-$950 for the repair (but I have no clue what its really going to cost)  which wouldn't be bad if the back was in my hands after a week - but at this point it will be a full month by next Monday.

That's so incredibly frustrating to hear.

The Dealer-PhaseOne Support contract guarantees 5 business day turn around time for digital back repairs from receipt at Phase One DK. Did you drop the back off at Calumet and have them ship it in for you? Are you sure that they shipped it in promptly?

Of course "things happen" but if a repair goes past the guaranteed turn around time I've always been able to get Phase to either give our customer a loaner unit or a replacement back.

More importantly most sync repairs can be done by a knowledgeable dealer in a few minutes for a minimal charge. However, not all Phase One dealers choose to order the repair kit and take the time to learn how to use it.

Why does Phase, DK, charge $625-$950 if it can be done within minutes for a "minimal" charge somewhere else?

I don't know the particulars of his case. All I know is that I've only seen one flash sync repair on a P series unit which wasn't dealer repairable.

I did neglect to note that my statement only applies to P-series backs. Any flash sync repair on an H series must be done by DK.

Thank you people for the info.

Doug, I appreciate your extensive replies.

Funny shall I look, in some period of time, with my P30 in the world of 250-Mpx compact cameras
