Long Firewire 800 lead for Hasselblad H3D
« on: April 15, 2009, 01:55:29 am »

I want to use my H3D on a 10m tripod (and sometime, maybe on a 30m tripod.)

Has anyone info on firewire 800 solutions 10m and over?

My supplier says that the latest 10m lead will not go into the socket on the camera, and there is an option that involves using a ethernet lead for most of the distance but he "couldn't possibly supply me until they had tested it" and I think they have had one on site for weeks without finding the time to test it.

Point Grey in Canada has a 10m 9-9 cable that should work well if it physically fits in the camera. They also sell a S800 repeater that goes up to 100m over CAT5.

Newnex has an optical repeater that goes up to 500m at S800.

I have a few cables from these guys, top quality. You have to file down the molding end that goes into the camera a bit, but then it works great, and acts as  strain relief

Also you might need an angled cable depending on how the camera is oriented. This place has the most possible angles that I know:

Try

I know that they sell a small adapter for the phase one backs.

Dick,

As mentioned above Granite digital manufacture high quality cables upto 10m.  Please remember though that in theory the longest Firewire 800 cable is by standard 4.5m.  Longer you are risking the possibility of a poor connection.  However, we have had ourselves pretty good results with Granite cables.  You do not need to modify the plugs.

If you want to go longer than you could chain up Firewire repeaters, remembering you will need to power them as well.

Belkin cables are also ok.

30m?  Hope you have access to a scissor lift!

Best,

David

Thank you all for your replies.

I am thinking of mounting my 50Megapixel digiback on a Sinar P3 on a 10m tripod on a 12m cherry picker.

There potential problems with running 240v ac up the tripod - not least of which is that the a/c might interfere with the signal.
