Epson posterboard or suggestions for . . .
« on: April 14, 2009, 02:28:33 pm »

Hi,  I've printed on a wide variety of papers before, but always just looking for the best media possible for a photograph.  Now I am looking for a durable display material for a non-profit fundraiser.   Ideally, I'd like it to be reasonable photographic quality, poster-size'ish, stiff enough to stand up on its own, and not ridiculously expensive.    Any suggestions?    Has anyone used one of the epson posterboards?   Or maybe print on a different paper and cheaply drymount to foamcore?   Or maybe canvas?

Any feedback or suggestions would be welcome.  Thanks!

The photog teacher in our art department swears by the Epson pre-mounted matte paper on poster board. He has printed and hung several shows with it, and it seems to hold up well. As long as you can make a good print on Epson Matte paper. (Ilford sells a version with their pearl finish paper.) It's not cheap, so I would make plenty of test prints on unmounted paper first.

He hangs it by making a wood "frame" for the back -- just 4 pieces of 1x2 wood, mitered and assembled as an open rectangle. This is glued to the back of the print, and the entire assembly hung on the wall. Easy, cheap, fast.

This is what I would do. Print on canvas. Protect with a coat or two of Glamor II. Dry mount to foamboard.
If you want it to be really sturdy pick one of the metal frames from American Frame. Goes together in 5 minute and really affordable. All for under $50.00,that is if you have a wide format 24" printer. Personally I would do a canvas gallery wrap, but then I have all the equipment.
