4 x 6 ND Grad Help
« on: April 14, 2009, 01:03:20 pm »

Hi, I recently lost my 85mm 0.9 SE Hitech filter while shooting in a river. I took this as a sign that it is time to upgrade my filter system, hehe

My main problem with the P filter system is I get vignetting or I see the P filter holder at 17mm on a FF(5DMKII) camera. So right now, I am currently looking at the Lee 0.9 SE 4x6 filter.  My question would be  what kind of filter holder AND 77mm adapter ring would I need? With filter holders available from Cokin, Hitech, Lee, etc, I'm not sure which one is best.

I am currently on this site at 2filter.com;

http://www.2filter.com/Leefilters/LeeFilters4x4.html

Are these the only 2 other accessories I will need? Will the filter holder be compatible to future filters I want to buy like the Singh-Ray Reverse ND Grad?

Lee 4x4 Filter Holder "FK" Lee FK filter holder     $74.44
Lee 77mm Wide Angle adapter ring                   $57.74

Thanks for any help

Adrian

Simple answer is yes to all.
It will be compatible with almost any square type filter. Lee uses adjustable filter rails that you can add to, subtract from, make thicker or make thinner. As well as the W/A ring and holder I would think about their hood (for your longer lenses) and either the upgrade kit later or the pro kit now instead of the FK.

Also bring along some black card or non reflective black masking tape on location to seal and flag off stray light.

Do you think it would make a difference if somebody uses the X-pro size filters rather than the 4x6 filters?

I would suggest looking at Universal Hood as the foundation for the system.

It does exactly that for me.

Thanks for the link. I have been using Hi Tech ND grads (85mm wide) for years and I want to upgrade to Lee 100x150's (4x6). I gave up using my holders with these filters, I've notice Art Wolfe and some other great photographers don't use holders. Without holders you can feather edges and stack tightly to reduce refraction. Got to be careful with camera shake of course. But I do like the holder with the hood, love to have one of those!
