Have you considered the Jone Cone's new Cone Color inks for the 9600/7600.  They seem to be a very good deal.  See: http://shopping.netsuite.com/s.nl/c.362672...ategory.9767/.f

I'm just running this ancient printer for personal use, and basically each cartridge will last a year or so, so I just need to swap out cartridges with their direct replacement, don't think I'll run through more than one more complete set before I junk the printer.

Its not an Antique,  You can buy the ink from ITsupplies.com

I still use the printer it prints great if profiled correctly and with properly coated paper.  Tim

good profile, good rag paper and epson genuine ink... and you can have very nice prints !

By the way, i've read somewere that the ink employed in the 9600 is supposed to be more archival than the current line... true ?

One of the problems with the second-source inks is that many are not archival.
I print little and use only original ink; i I were a business maybe I would not be so picky about making my customers prints last.
I do my own profiles, as I am a color consultant; in fact I mostly use my own software suite for my own prints on the theory that one should eat one's own cooking.
The 2100/9600 inks seem quite permanent to me. In some ways they look better than the next generation; however B&W prints need to be done in a different way with the old printers and inks, and are very easy to do with the new ones. The toughest tones to render with the old generation are flesh and hair shadows.

So Edmund,  when you junk it are you going to push it off the 3rd floor and let it hit the pavement then take a photo of the aftermath?

I'll take an action sequence of the flight, first.

I expect at the current rate of use the 9600 should last me another 24 months or so at very low running cost, provided I manage to scrounge some cheap ink.

I think people in the Yahoo Wide Format group regularly advertise printers of this ilk which they are scrapping and giving away ....
