Rotatrim M24 leaving a line after cutting the paper 5mm in
« on: April 08, 2009, 10:38:11 pm »

Hi Guys,

We a small rotatrim 24" which is randomly leaving a line on the paper, especially noticeable in the dark prints. has anyone else here had a similar problem and solved it?
its giving me the #$%^&*. It is not paper dependent, as it has happens on thin and thick art paper.

I would appreciate your help

thanks

I don't have a fix for the trimmer but I personally won't use them anymore for those types of reasons. I have a variety of steel rulers and x-acto blades (change often). A great production guy I used to work with used medical blades for an even more precise cut. Might take longer to work with it but I feel more precise and trailing tapered ends on each cut like the trimmers.

good luck

I had a mid-level rotary trimmer, and, aside from cutting  single sheets of 20 lb paper, it was useless. I went back to steel rulers and sharp knives. I want to buy a heavy duty guillotine type trimmer of the type we have at the office, but I don't have space in my study to devote to it. If kept clean, those trimmers work very well.

Henrik - I had this same issue on my 36" and 54" Rototrims - a straight line across the photo after it's been trimmed. It's caused by the steel guide attached to the trimmer wheel. You can remove this and everything will run perfect. Also make sure the paper isn't bent upwards - it may be scratched by the steel compartment holding the trimmer wheel.

The other thing to be aware of is grit that may stick to the plastic sleeve running the length of the trimmer. As you move a photo below it the grit can cause scratches - the sleeve can be removed and cleaned by hand without any issues.

Thanks guys for all the feedback, I really appreciate it. I think I will try to remove that steel bracket that is on the trimmer which is what I suspect is the one causing the problem, after that I will get a good cutting matte and sharp knives and do it that way, but my experience with that is not without issues, in particular then you have used that matte a bit, and you get cut marks in it, the knife will sometimes follow an old cut, and it may not always be as you are currently cutting :-) alternative is to cut on glass and change the knifes more often.

thanks

Less of a burr on the cut edge of the sheet than you get from a self healing mat, also.

Yup I had this too. It was the steel bracket which I removed. No problems since.

I will get out the sledgehammer and remove it with pleasure :-) We wasted so many prints on this, cos it is a bit too dark where we are cutting, yes, I have told them! but do they listen? sometimes! :-)

thanks
