Samples from 50mm f2.8 (ROllei/Hy6/AFi) ?
« on: April 01, 2009, 09:07:23 am »

I'm curious about the performance of this lens, particularly at f2.8 and f8.

If you have this lens and have a moment, could you post a sample of a closely focused subject (1-2 metres) with some background blur at f2.8? Could you also post a 100% crop so we can see the resolution at this aperture?

An f8-11 sample would be interesting too to see the maximum resolution performance.

As there are various versions of this lens, please state which one you have. Thanks!

You can use Mediafire.com for free with no file size limits (well 100MB per file, but unlimited downloads and bandwidth). Easy to setup. Then just post the download links here.

FYI, you can edit posts so you don't have to create news ones because of errors or omissions. Remember when posting not to use your browser back button, you can wind up with multiple of the same postings. It just helps to keep things cleaner and easier to view and understand.
Thanks John let me try

Thanks, that demonstrates the bokeh. What about 100% crops at f2.8 and f8-11? Although the plastic toy may not be the best subject for fine detail...

Having recently taken my first steps into the Rollei lens system, I too am interested in this.

If that's full-aperture f2.8, how come I can see a pentagonal signature of the aperture in the background highlights? Shouldn't they be circular? E.g. look at the hedge directly over the tricycle's saddle area. Are you sure it was f2.8?

I have used both the Manual Focus version of the lens and now the AF version. The biggest difference between the MF and AF version is weight - the AF being only half the weight.  I do believe the AF version is sharper at f/2.8 because I tested it with my cf-39ms in multishot mode and was amazed by the sharpness of an artwork with fine etching and detail it had.  I had shot a band with the MF version for a cover and remember switching to the 40mm from the 50 because I thought it was sharper.   But no longer have both copies I like the AF version because of the lighter weight and AF.  I kind of think the AF version is different in distortion and bokeh but still very nice.  I recommend it.    I did however compare the the AF version to the 60mm schneider curtagon and I think the curtagon draws with more character - something truly brilliant about that lens.     Oh and one more comment- the AF 50 that I have may be different than the AFD versions but I don't know.   My AF 50 does exhibit a tiny amount of lateral CA easily corrected in post, which is only evident for objects at a distance.   I don't see it when shooting up close like in this shot of a model - sorry wide open -  f/5 at 1/50th but at least you can see the wide distortion and look. It performs well in back lit situations.

They both have the same optical design.

Thierry

Oh and one more comment- the AF 50 that I have may be different than the AFD versions but I don't know.

There have been rumors that there were some differences, perhaps in tolerances, but these have never been confirmed. Any further thoughts?

Geoffrey,

These are not rumors, but yes, the samples are selected (or at least have been during my time) under tighter tolerances.
