LR catalog transfer to new drive/directory
« on: March 31, 2009, 04:06:12 pm »

By default my LR 2.3 catalog is lodged on my "C" drive. This drive is becoming 'overloaded' - I'm startign to get error messges that the drive is too full. I want to move my LR catalog, previews, backup, etc.,  to another drive - one that has lots of unused capacity.
My question is how to do so? Do I merely export the catalog and import it to the new drive, or is there a more effective way to do this transfer?

Just copy using Explorer or the Mac equivalent. Your catalog consists of a file named XXX.lrcat where xxx is the catalog name and, in the same folder, a sub-folder named xxx Previews.lrdata. Copy the file and the folder, with all its contents, to the new location, then open LR and use the Open Catalog command to open it. Once you are sure everything is working OK, delete the originals.

Appreciate the assistance. I had thought of using Explorer [I'm a PC Vista user] but was concerned the method would result in a 'lost' catalog that LR would not be able to find. You've reassured me - thanks.

even if the catalog is 'lost', it'll ask you if you want to locate it and then you just navigate to it

Yes. Safest way (other than using a bit by bit clone utility) is to use the Export, Import catalog command.

Appreciate all the help - one further question - just to confirm-  in addition to the catalog 'lrcat' file and the preview files 'lrdata' I can, using the Explorer method should also transfer/move the presets files, etc?
