As a sailor, I'm drawn to this image and the story that it tells. I like it very much. If it was mine, I might work on the sky a bit. I think if you did some burning, it might create a little more drama. Well done though Jason.

I quite like it.  The symmetrical treatment works for me as does the huge expanse of ocean.  The rock and the lighthouse also mimic the bow of a ship.

One suggestion for improvement, the horizon appears just a touch off-horizontal in my opinion, dropping slightly to the right.

Great job nonetheless.

Well?  I did see the similarity to the bow of a ship, but to me the angle (helicopter?) and the placement of the lighthouse make it look like an afterthought.  It was like you were making an image of the ocean and happened to notice... "Oh, there's a lighthouse down there."

I agree with this asessment, I really like the tones in the photo and the overall sharpness of the image, however I feel like the perspective is taken from a bt too high up. the perspective issue here for me is that my eyes have trouble focusing on the central point of your image. Should I be looking into the horizon or down at the lighthouse?

It looks great to me. IMHO, what makes the image work is that the white caps and waves in the sea make a pattern that leads the eye across the sea and to the wonderful stormy sky. In most critique sites I have visited, there is a tendency to want to over process other people's images. It is easy to make a photo darker, lighter, etc, but the maker may have decided the sky looks exactly the way the scene was, or that they do not want too much processing, etc. Something to consider also.

Hadn't you stated it I wouldn't have remarked... quite minor but yes it seems so.
Another minor remark : the vignetting is a tad on the heavy side to my taste, it goes a bit against the open-sea feeling & vastness conveyed by the image.

Great shot!

Again, thank you all for the thoughtful comments!  This site by far has the best critiques.

For those interested, this was taken from an observation point above the light house.  Unfortunately, the light house isn't accessible to the public for safety/security reasons.  My intention with this image was to capture the relative smallness of the light house next to the vastness of the ocean.  Not too original, but the sea continues to amaze and inspire me.

Again, many thanks for you thoughtful comments.

Other than the slight horizon tilt, I wouldn't change a thing.  The balance may not conform to normal rules, in regards to the angle or placement of the lighthouse, but I don't find it distractingly low and see the lighthouse as a complementary component of the composition, but not the sole focus.  For me, it anchors the sea, which is the primary subject, and gives a counterpoint for the vast expanse of ocean and distant horizon.  Sometimes not conforming to classic rules of thumb produces more distinct images.  In my mind, you have done just that.  Thanks for sharing.

An amazing photo.  Once I've seen it for a few minutes, I might find a nit to pick, but then again, why bother?
