looking for a good studio fan...
« on: March 25, 2009, 03:08:42 am »

Hello,

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good fan that can be used for studio photography?
I'm not only looking to simply add some movement to a model's hair, but would like to be able to add a lot of movement to clothes
and fabrics on a set.
A while back a studio I was renting had a great automotive fan (or so I was told) that not only had a lot of power, but also a great deal of directional control.
It could also be clamped so it did not constantly tie up an assistant...

Any ideas would be appreciated!
thanks!

The industry standard: Reel EFX III

http://www.reelefx.com/index.php?c=product.view&id=3

Can be mounted to a short c-stand, put on an apple box, or just left on the floor. Might be better to rent if you have a rental house nearby.

Electric leaf blower is the most directional and powerful I have ever used, just damn noisy.

There is nothing in between? i mean the first is so expensive, but the second is great price but i feel it is not good enough, so anything with say $300-500 and great quality? what makes the first to be about 21 times the price of the second?

I was wondering the same thing too.  Something in the $300 range would be perfect if I could easily clamp it...

The Reel EFX is made for the film/photo industry and so it's built pretty rugged and meant to be mounted to stands, etc. It's super powerful and directional and also has a good deal of control. For instance one could leave it on the lowest setting which is practically off, and simply push the "turbo" button for a big gust of high powered wind. Rapidly pushing the button is perfect for picking hair up when doing fashion/portraits etc. The high price is the reason why I suggested renting.

I'm sure if you look at the Vornado site you could find something in between. Maybe try a home improvement store for an industrial size fan?

I just bought this one for my studio ($925):

It is built very very well, and does everything I need it to do.  It seems to be a nice in-between the high-end (rental) fans and the Home Depot options.
