Z3200 problem or not?
« on: March 23, 2009, 03:53:17 pm »

hi.
this is my first post, but i'm a strong reader of luminous landscape.
I bought z3200 some day ago.
unfortunatley i have noticed the following problem:
in a sleep mode the z3200 has a strange sound like a fan (kindly note that in the activity mode the sound is the same)
let's explain better:

in activity mode i can hear the fan

in sleep mode i can hear the same fan (not higher nor lower)

in turnoff mode (with NO led switch on the front panel) i can hear a lower sound of "fan"

in turnoff mode (with rear switch turned off) i can't hear anything.

is, for z3200, the right way to work ?

i called the HP techinical assistance i had not any solution, but a technician will come to value the "problem".

i red that this could be a normal thing but please somebody could help me?
best regards.

Hi Manlio,

I have a Z3100 and the fan runs constantly which is normal.  The printer will occasionally fire up on its own and do some maintenance.  This is normal as well.  The manual suggests that you leave the printer on at all times although some turn theirs off during long periods on nonuse.

It is normal for the Z models. Probably the price for the fact that the printer can be reached through the network all the time. For the job log, ink left, etc. There must be electronic components that need  cooling even when the machine is idle. If you have no problem with the time it takes to initialise from power down then you can switch it off. It will not do the nozzle checks then and isn't recommended by HP but users have reported that it didn't create problems for them.

This could be my mistake. Based it on the Z3100 that I have and other Z3100 user reports. Soon I can compare its behaviour with a Z3200.

There is still a small fan that stays on for the 3200 as did the 3100. The only way to stop the fan completely is turn off the power supply button. I usually leave the switch on, just use the front panel on off button to sleep wake up the printer.
The idle mode doesn't turn off the fans for the print heads and is quite noisy. I cannot understand why there is no sleep mode that turns off the printer as does the on off button on the front panel. Maybe I'm missing something.

Same exact thing happened to me...
As a previous owner of a z3100 I found the noise level a bit overwhelming and totally weird that the fan would still be on when the printer was OFF (not in sleep mode).
Called tech support, they sent someone in that replaced the logic board... same noise afterwards. A few days passed and they sent another tech.
Replaced a few more parts... same noise afterwards. He made some phone calls and then was finally confirmed that it was normal!

Oh well...

I own a Z3200 for 5 months now. Believe me, the fan runs, and you'll hear it. I work in a 18 m2 room, so I'm close to the printer. Nevertheless I might work for hours without noticing the whisper of the fan. One get used to it. I got prints from the Z3200 I could only dream of, I have no problems whatsoever with the machine and if this little sound stays the only "problem", I consider myself a lucky man.

Actually they sub-contract for on-site support... but keep a close eye on what's happening. When we complained about star wheels mark on the z3100 we got contacted by an engineer from barcelona who came to paris to install a prototype that was to become the new star wheels mechanism.
They also sent a few people from barcelona to hear about our experience.
And when you call they always send someone the next day. Not the case with epson... we had to struggle for a month to get a replacement for a faulty head when we bought an 11880 and I never ever managed to get next day support even if that's what we supposedly paid for.

But yes, that fan thing was rather amusing...
