Epson 3800 and "max paper size" - really?
« on: March 23, 2009, 02:07:30 pm »

Is 17 x 22 really the largest paper this printer can handle? I need to go to at least 23" in the length. Has anyone tried longer-length, non-Epson paper in this printer?

Use the rear feed or auto sheet feed. Have a look T Eric Chan's page http://people.csail.mit.edu/ericchan/dp/Ep..._smallest_sizes
Non Epson paper works fine, though some brands better than others. Can you get a small sample pack to try out?

As Taquin says up to 37" is no problem with cut sheets, just set a custom paper size in the driver.

There is also a free utility called UDPS (user defined paper size) authored by Helmar Dahmer that allows even greater paper lengths to be used (up to 6.5m).
I've not used it myself, but there seem to be plenty of reports of people using it without problems.
Links for the download and documentation can be found at http://dahmerphotography.blogspot.com/

I get inkjetart luster paper in 17x25 inch cut sheets, which easily feed through the regular paper feeder.

the UDPS utility is (as I recall) only applicable to the Windows v5.5 driver.  Later versions will not work.  Yes, 37" is the longest you can get out of the 3800 w/o heroics

I didn't know about the UDPS utility. This is very cool. Any reason I can't load the v5.5 driver on to my laptop, connect to my network and print long from that? The v6.5 driver has been very stable without the communication problems I had with earlier drivers.

beats me.  I use a Mac and UDPS requires a PC.  I have QImage but I just haven't tried on the PC (w/ v5.5 of the driver) as 37" is enough for me now.

Qimage needs a banner or roll mode in the printer driver to do the poster/tiles trick. The 3800 doesn't have that mode so can't go beyond this "sheet length" limit. There was a Gutenprint discussion whether that driver could be used to stretch the length limit. That software also covers more OSses. Don't know the outcome.

I recently looked around and believe me, 17x25 is none too popular in cut sheet.  I believe I saw Harman FB AI available and also, if any of the RedRiver papers float your boat, they do 17x25 too.  I didn't see much else in the popular FA papers that were 25" long but I certainly didn't do an exhaustive search.  inkjetart uCeramic also

also, RedRiver *will* do custom paper size (25.5)............... although you're going to take a *major* hit on $$$ since you would need to step up to the
next size.  The RR UPSatin is a very nice everyday paper somewhere between Epson PLPP and Ilford GSLPP

Check B&H.  They had some last time I checked.  And by all means, try papers other than Epson.  Hahnemuhle is my personal fave.

www.inkjetart.com sells their house brand paper in 17x25 inch cut sheets in Micro Ceramic Lustre and Micro Ceramic Gloss. They also carry Harman Matte and Gloss FB papers, and Inkpress Fiber Satin and a digital fine art paper. Search results linked here. Not a huge variety of papers, but I find the Lustre paper to be my paper of choice for 99% of my printing. That it costs half of the Epson paper doesn't hurt.

The usual disclaimer applies: I am a satisfied customer only.
