question about leaf backs and RZ
« on: March 19, 2009, 03:55:42 pm »

Hi,
I'm mulling around the idea of moving to a digital back in the next year or so.  I'm attracted to the phase set up, but still want the option to use the back on my RZ.  I was told by a salesperson that in order to use the phase back (with phase mount) that i'd have to move to a RZIId body and adapter plate to use with my RZ.  I'm not against that idea and have enjoyed using the phase backs with an H2 set up for rental in the past few years (have not used Capture 4, only 3 so far).  If I were to go the leaf route (say the Mamiya DL28 or DL33 set up), can I use that same back on my RZII with just an adapter plate (is one available for that mount combination) or would I still have to get a RZIID body?

thanks,
craig

question about leaf backs and RZ

Hi Craig,

I use a Leaf Aptus 75 with a Mamiya mount on my Mamiya 645AFDII, Mamiya RZII and Mamiya RZIID camera bodies.

Leaf have a adapter plate for the RZII to mount the back to the camera and then a connection to the the lens and back to synchronise them together. The system works perfect for me.

The same plate works on the RZIID as well as the dedicated adaptor plate from Mamiya which synchronise the Leaf back from the back of the camera. Basically telling the Leaf back that it is on a Mamiya 645AFDII.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Simon

Just to add that if you liked working with the H2 and you still want to use your RZII or an RZIId, we make an H-to-RZ adapter that works in the same way as described by Simon above i.e. sync via lens-to-back cable. This will also allow you to rotate the back just like any of our other adapters or your film magazine.

The sniffer program puts a big Phase One icon in the sky like the bat signal.

RZ Pro IID: any Phase One back with a Mamiya-style mount. This means you can use a Phase One body or Mamiya AFDI, II or III and a RZ ProIID with the same digital back, a very popular option. The adapter requires no plugs or cables.

RZ Pro II: any Phase One back with a classic Hasselblad-V (also sometimes called a universal mount) which means you could use the same back with your Hasselblad 500 series body as an RZ Pro II. The adapter has a cable that runs from the front of the body (not the lens) to the adapter plate.

The P65+ is the exception. It could be used on the IID or II with the methods and mounts described above, but could also be used in the Hasselblad H and Contax mounts using a sync cable to the lens. This would be the closest to the original 6x7 frame since it has the largest sensor size of any digital back on the market.

Generally speaking most of our RZ interested customers end up buying an RZ Pro IID and a Mamiya mount digital back with a Phase One body or AFD I/II. That way they have a focal plane body as well as a leaf shutter body.

Hi,
I use the RZ67ProII with a Leaf Aptus22 for the studio and the AFD/III body with the same Aptus for location work (or strange angles).

The aptus22 can be moved from the RZ to the 645 in a second.
There is an adaptor plate for the Leaf for the RZ which also can be removed very quickly when you want to shoot film.

From the back to the lens is one cable (two are delivered but you only need one for the normal operation).

The RZ67ProII is an amazing system, I absolutly love it for my work, the 645AFD/III is a very nice machine and more portable, having both is the best of two worlds so to speak.
The RZ67ProII can be bought for very little online, also the lenses and accessories are not that expensive.

thanks,
I have an RZ system already (but would probably have to get some wider glass if i would go to a back for it).   i love shooting with it which is why i'd want it as an option with whatever system i go with...

If you don't have the "D" version of the RZ, you'll want the Leaf plates, as the Mamiya electronic adapter is not made for the "D" (if you're going to use a Leaf back).
