Vista Color Management Problem
« on: March 10, 2009, 10:10:31 am »

I've long admired the depth of knowledge here in the LL forums.
But I think this may prove a challenge!

I've been bashing my head against my printer colour management for quite a while
But it turns out my calibrated screen isn't showing the correct colours.

The problem is like this.
1) Reset the vista Color Management to use the default sRGB profile everywhere it can be set including System Defaults.
2) Reboot for changes to take effect.
3) Apply the calibrated monitor profile - colours look great.
4) Reboot
5) Vista loses the calibrated profile during startup (normal Vista behaviour  ), but the colours already look wrong
6) Apply the calibrated monitor profile - this just makes the colours MUCH worse!!!!!!

Full techie details, screenshots, profiles, etc over on the Adobe Forums as at first I thought this was a Lightroom problem.

I'm becoming convinced Vista is double managing my colour profile.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

Have you updated to the latest Service Pack?  32-bit or 64-bit?

I have heard of thie problem on other forums, and the answer seems to be updating the the latest service pack and whatever update patches are currently available beyond that.

I am running Vista (Business) 64-bit and have had no problems at all.

Good question - I'm on Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 running on a 16bit Dell Studio 17 laptop.
I just checked for updates there were no new ones.
I reviewed my hidden updates list, just in case - there were only the language packs, a DreamScene content pack and a sound pack.

I've seen a lot of forum threads about losing the profile after reboot problem - none of the fixes do it for me

On Vista 64 bit, depending on the quality of your monitor - you may find that setting the Windows Color System Defaults, Device Profile to Adobe RGB  (1998)
Try the delayed Loading Technique.
1) Take/ remove the Calibration Loader from the Windows Startup menu:
2) create a shortcut on your desktop for the Calibration Laoader
3) After Windows Vista completely boots up and loads everything - even the superfetch.
4) Cick the Calibration Loader shortcut

BAM, perfectly loaded ICC profiles.  This is definitely the method for multiple monitors (obviously 2 profiles)  This will work with a single monitor too.

Good luck

Cheers RS - that's a good suggestion and it's something I've not tried yet.
I'll try it later and report back.

Vista Color Management Problem

Hmmm - not sure I've got the hang of this delayed loading thing.
I moved three colour related items from the All Users Startup menu and left them on the desktop
- ColorMunki Gamma.exe
- colormunki.exe
- ColorMunkiPhotoTray.exe
I reset the Color Management to sRGB across the board and rebooted.
The colours were default Dell blue cast - all applications exactly the same colours
I tried clicking all three executables - no change on displayed colours at all !
I used DisplayProfile.exe to kick the profiles to use the calibrated profile - colours looked correct in all applications.
But a reboot brought back the purple cast.
In other words removing those three applications from startup seems to have made no difference.

Turns out ColorMunki Gamma is just a shortcut to Calibration Loader - so that's one mystery solved.
But I've tried all sorts of permutations of reset, reboot and kick and all they have done is confirm my initial findings.
I must be missing something!!!!
