Asking my printer supplier for a bottle of oil, HP part # 6040-0854, he gave me an oiling kit "HP Designjet 1000 Series Roadrunner Oil-Applicator" containing a plastic slider with 2 foam pieces to oil the steel transport bar. The kit came with a small bottle (3 cc) of HP oil # 6040-0971

This should be supplied with the printers. When I asked them to make this readily available in Barcelona they basically said it wouldn't be necessary. Well  it is .

Even better, i got the Oil-Applicator for free when I ordered a large amount of ink.
The company, specialized in large format HP printers, is GraficLine in Germany http://www.graficline.de - and I'm a satisfied customer.

Can you describe the foam applicator?  Do you just add a few drops to the foam and then run it along the length of the rail?  I have what HP labeled a "lubrification kit" (sic), but it came with a bottle of oil and an eyedropper.  If I understand it right, your process sounds like it would result in better distribution of oil.

I bought a 4 oz bottle of Super Lube Synthetic oil from Amazon. Much cheaper than HP oil. I was told by an HP tech to carefully apply a light synthetic oil to the rail - perhaps once a month - as this is a possible area of Z3100 equipment breakage. I used a Q-tip. But you have to be very careful to get the oil just on the metal rail - and watch for leaving bits of Q-tip behind.
